Broadcast Signal Encoders And Decoders
The category of broadcast encoders and decoders was a very wide one even back in the days where
all such products came as rack-mounting hardware. Its horizon has extended even further given the
accelerating migration from hardware to software and cloudware. The following is a selective look at
recently announced broadcast-quality encoding and decoding products...

wcom Systems introduced
at IBC2014 ﬁve new products
designed for various roles. These
include audio-over-IP contribution/
distribution, FM-to-IP (cable
headend) provision, multi-role
FM reception, and SFN operation,
together with what is claimed to
be a new future-proof hardware
platform. The company's MM01
is a new compact multi-role
device for audio over IP, intended
primarily for integration into studio
to transmitter links. The FM2TS
is an eight-channel FM to MPEG
transport stream IP gateway
which can be used to provide
FM audio to cable broadcasters,
or to stream eight FM channels
to a quality assurance facility as
part of an FM monitoring system.
The FM02 combines 2wcom's FM
and RDS monitoring products
into a single unit designed for the
multiple roles of demodulation,
source-switching for FM backup,
and FM/RDS parameter monitoring.
Also introduced at IBC2014 was
2wcom's Firefly. This is a DVB
processing and contribution
coder which includes T2-MI deencapsulation, PLP replacement
and ad-insertion as well as multifeed SFN network synchronisation
and transport stream multiplexing.
