The show is India's "most celebrated, stimulating and expansive global

industry" and the Mumbai event reflects a flourishing sub-continent
broadcast sector...

he twenty-fourth Broadcast
India takes place in Mumbai this
month against a background of a
growing economy and continually
increasing spread of TV and radio
outlets in the region.
The statistics are impressive. India
has more than 150 million TV homes,
of which 25% use direct-to-home
satellite and 51% receive cable TV.
The government plans to digitise
all TV transmissions by December
this year. There are more than 700
TV channels. News programmes
often outperform entertainment
output. There is an array of 24-hour
news TV stations.
Doordarshan, the public TV,
operates multiple services, including
ﬂagship DD1, which reaches some
400 million viewers. Multichannel,
direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV
is a huge hit. Major platforms Dish
TV, Tata-Sky, Sun Direct, Big TV
and Airtel Digital TV have millions
of subscribers. State-owned
Doordarshan Direct runs a free-to-air
DTH service. Music-based FM radio
stations abound. But only public
All India Radio can produce news
programming. And on top of all this,
it has the world's most proliﬁc ﬁlm
industry - Bollywood.
The show organisers state: "In
the ever-changing visage of the
broadcast and entertainment
industry, Broadcast India has
consistently remained India's
most celebrated, stimulating and
expansive global marketplace for
the latest and greatest technological
innovations in the industry.
Broadcast India Show 2014 will also
be the most eminent platform for all
there is to do with broadcast, ﬁlm,
audio, radio from its content creation
to its management and delivery."
This hype is backed up by a report
conducted by FICCI (Federation of
Indian Chambers of Commerce and
Industry) and accountants KPMG
which says, "The Indian M&E (Media
& Entertainment) industry grew from
INR 728 billion in 2011 to INR 820
billion in 2012, registering an overall
growth of 12.6%. Given the impetus
introduced by digitisation, continued
growth of regional media, continued

strength in the ﬁlm sector and fast
increasing new media businesses,
the industry is estimated to achieve
a growth of 11.8% in 2013 to touch
INR 917 billion. Going forward, the
sector is projected to grow at a
healthy CAGR of 15.2% to reach
INR 1661 billion by 2017."
Television continues to be the
dominant segment; however, the
report records strong growth posted
by new media sectors, animation/
VFX and a comeback in the ﬁlm
and music sectors on the back of
strong content and the beneﬁts of
digitisation. Radio is anticipated to
see a spurt in growth at a CAGR of
16.6% over the period 2012 to 2017,
post the rollout of Phase 3 licensing.
Digitisation of distribution has
brought in the promise of more
sustainable and proﬁtable business
models across media sectors. It has
enabled the ﬁlms sector to make a
comeback this year. The industry
has achieved 77% digitisation of
screens and expects to be close
to 100% digitised in the next 18
months to two years.
This widely-touted "healthy"
marketplace will no doubt be
reﬂected in exhibitor numbers and
visitor attendance at Broadcast
India. The show will be host to
35 participating countries and
to over 550 companies, many of
them exhibiting at the show for the
very first time.
While a good number of
international manufacturers will
be represented in their own right,
many will feature on the stands of
their sub-continent subsidiaries
or representatives. Following hot
on the heels of the IBC exhibition,
the Mumbai show will give local
operators the opportunity to
check out the innovations and new
technologies debuted in Amsterdam.
