JVC Camcorders To Feature
Advanced Zixi Technology
IBC2014 to showcase integrated IP broadcasting
solution with JVC's GY-HM650/850/890 camcorders...

video has become a major issue in
today's broadcast business.
Many users hesitate to apply
this technology, since they cannot
imagine using the internet or private
IP networks for secure broadcast
signal transmission in HD quality.
JVC Professional and Zixi, the
leading IP broadcasting company
for cloud-enabled networking,
have formed a partnership to push
forward this innovative solution.
Compared to conventional
transmission methods, the
advantages of IP broadcasting
technology take full effect in the ﬁeld
and make live video data transfer
easier. In particular, ENG and EFP
applications beneﬁt from minimised
technical effort, large cost savings,
easy handling and more efﬁcient
workflows. Furthermore, signal
transmission is secure and lossless,
with minimal latency.
The ﬁrst result of the cooperation
between JVC and Zixi is an integrated
IP broadcasting solution included on
the JVC GY-HM650, GY HM850 and
GY-HM890 camcorders, meaning
there's no need for any additional
equipment. JVC will exhibit

cameras featuring Zixi technology at
IBC this year. On 12th September at 3
pm; Gustav Emrich, JVC's European
Product Manager, and Israel Drori,
President and Founder of Zixi,
will give a joint presentation - this
event will take place at IBC Content
Everywhere Cloud Solutions, an area
dedicated to cloud technology that
is free to attend.
Zixi's streaming technology applies
advanced content-aware error
correction to compensate packet
loss, which may occur during data
transmission via wireless internet
connections. In this operating
mode, the decoder dynamically
analyses internet link performance
(Link Monitoring) and ensures that
the camera will make bandwidth
adjustments. If necessary, data
packets are transmitted again with
resultant latency being kept within
tight limits. This advanced forward
error correction is able to reliably
compensate jitter and packet loss,
up to 30%. By doing this, stable data
streaming under difﬁcult conditions
is ensured - even if signal detection
of conventional systems fails. For
safety reasons, LCD monitor and
camera viewﬁnder display streaming
status and signal quality. On the
receiving side, only a Zixi-compatible
decoder or server is required.
Using Zixi services, additional
features such as time shift streaming,
cloud based recording and playback
from the data cloud are also available.

Two years ago at NAB, JVC
launched the era of IP-based
newsgathering with the launch
of its 600 Series ProHD mobile
news cameras. The handheld
cameras had an impressive
list of features, including
a built-in wide angle 23x
autofocus zoom lens,

native ﬁle recording and superior
low-light performance. Last year,
JVC upgraded the GY-HM650
camera to allow live, real-time HD
transmission from the camera using
a 3G/4G modem or mobile hotspot
while simultaneously recording
footage to SDHC or SDXC memory
cards. Suddenly, cameramen
could provide live reports from the
ﬁeld - without an add-on box or
backpack transmitter.
This year, JVC took another step
forward with the launch of its GYHM850 and GY-HM890 ProHD
shoulder-mount cameras, which
significantly expand on the live
HD streaming and file transfer
capabilities of the GY-HM650.
Both new cameras feature a builtin streaming engine with FTP and
3G/4G connectivity to allow live
HD transmission directly from the
camera. A built-in processor with
proprietary algorithms, advanced
content-aware error correction and
JVC's new Advanced Streaming
Technology (AST) maximise
bandwidth, provide real-time
feedback of streaming status and
compensate for up to 30% packet
loss to ensure reliable transmission,
even under difﬁcult conditions.
Beyond their reliable, high quality
live HD transmission, the 3-CMOS
cameras with interchangeable
Fujinon 20x autofocus zoom lenses
also deliver amazing HD (and SD)
imagery, even in low light conditions.
User-friendly features include dual
SDHC/SDXC card slots for recording
footage in a variety of native ﬁle
formats, four-channel audio with two
XLR mic/line inputs, 4.3-inch LCD
monitor and LCOS colour viewﬁnder,
HD-SDI and HDMI out, and genlock
and time code terminals for multicamera setups. The GY-HM890 also
includes an HD/SD-SDI Pool Feed
input for increased ENG ﬂexibility.
Plus, for studio or multi-camera
ﬁeld production, it accommodates
JVC fibre or multi-core camera
modules and is compatible with

JVC's full range of components
and accessories.

4K Design Concepts

JVC provided a glimpse into an
expanding 4K future at NAB, with
new technology design concepts,
and these models will also be
on show at IBC. They have been
improved and updated since NAB
but full details aren't available at
the time of going to press.
The ﬁrst two prototypes signal
JVC's entry into the digital
cinematography marketplace; there
is a 4K shoulder-mount production
camera equipped with a Super
35mm sensor and PL lens mount,
which delivers full 4K imagery at up
to 50/60p, as well as HD imagery
at up to 240p for super slo-mo
applications.
Also shown at NAB was a
handheld unit that uses Micro
Four Thirds (MFT) lenses originally
developed for DSLRs to deliver
cinema-quality images in a compact
camcorder. Both cameras featured
a new 13.6 MP 4K CMOS image
sensor developed by JVC's sister
company, AltaSens.
The new image sensor was also
integrated into a two-piece mini 4K
camera, which delivers 4096x2160
or 3840x2160 resolution at up to
50/60p, records locally to SDXC or
SDHC media and offers IP control
and viewing. It produces beautiful 4K
video from its Super 35mm CMOS
sensor and there is a choice of either
a video recording and control system
or a gimbal option.
The base of the gimbal also houses
technology that has the same IP
capabilities as the GY-HM890, while
the video recording unit features
a foldable 7-inch HD LCD monitor
and offers wireless camera control.
So, while the camera produces
images suitable for cinematic
applications, the system also has
applications for broadcast news and
could open a whole new world for
broadcasters.
