InBroadcast last looked at the
niche business of broadcast cable,
fibre and connectors. Niche it may
be but still a vital one to judge from
the amount of snakeware still in use
under the floors of the production,
post-production and playout
studios that form the backbone of
the industry.
Long overdue but now very much
in progress is the great switchover
from copper cable to optical fibre.
Catalysts for this transition are
increasing delivery bit-rates and
growing pressure on space.
I recently visited a new production
centre being constructed in one
of Europe's tallest buildings. The
facility was highly impressive but,
for whatever reason, the raised floor
provided for data cables was only
50 millimetres high, a long way short
of the 300 mm void which used to
be commonplace. Welcome to the
underworld of high speed narrowgauge optical fibre, with the big
extra advantage of zero electrical
interference.
So what's new? A dangerous
question to ask just ahead of IBC but
let's take a look at the most recent
developments from the main players
in this product area.
Argosy has installed an optical
fibre termination and test facility at
its UK headquarters. This allows the
company assemble and repair fibre
cables, to any specification for use
within the broadcast domain.
Belden Inc has introduced the
Hirschmann HiLCOS 8.9, latest
version of its WLAN firmware
to manage its line of OpenBAT
industrial wireless devices. This
release is the first industrial
wireless application of integrated
Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP)
technology, a new industry standard
that allows systems to overcome

network failures without affecting
data transmission.
Bryant Unlimited has extended
its range of 75 ohm digital coaxial
video cables for high definition
imaging for use up to 3 gigabits
per second / 4.5 gigahertz. The
additions are BD SD50/53 SDI video
cables (medium); BD SD50F/53F
Flexible SDI video cables (medium);
BD SD10/13 SDI video cables
(large); BD SD10F/13F Flexible
SDI video cables (large). The cables
are constructed with gas-injected
insulation, dual braid and tape
screening. Bryant stocks matching
connectors for its entire cable range.
Camera Corps' SIMPLY SMPTE
compact remote camera link is
designed for use at large-scale
outside broadcast events and in
electronic field production. Formerly
available only for hire but now also
for purchase, it allows any remotely
controlled camera system in the
Camera Corps product range to
be connected over long distance
via SMPTE 3K-standard electrical/
optical cable. Large remote heads
and boxed cameras can be operated
over five kilometres or more while
maintaining the security and
reliability of a dedicated link.
The relatively high power
efficiency of Camera Corps' Q-Ball
and Q-Ball Pre-Set robotic pan/tilt/
zoom/focus cameras enables these
to be controlled over more than eight
kilometres. The SIMPLY SMPTE
system comprises a base unit and
a smaller remote unit. Each has a
very compact physical footprint.
Powered by 110 or 240 volts
alternating-current, the 303 x 165 x
65 millimetre 3.63 kilogramme base
unit incorporates an optical input
for incoming video data. Electrical
inputs allow direct connection of
analogue genlock video and audiofrequency control data. A loop-

Camera Corps' SIMPLY SMPTE compact remote camera link for OB use

through connector is provided for
the control data channel. Incoming
video from the remote camera is
accessible via two HD-SDI outputs.
Canare's recently introduced
RoHs-compliant active BNCs
come in right angle (BCA-TL/RL)
and straight mount (BCA-TS/RS)
configurations. They fully support
3G-SDI/HD-SDI/SD-SDI/DVB-ASI
as well as the SMPTE 424M, 292M,
and 259M standards. The new
series can incorporate a return-loss
network, cable equaliser (BCA-RS/
RL receiver) or cable driver (BCA-TS/
TL transmitter) as part of the BNC
receptacle while retaining the same
size as Canare's BCJ-BPLH series.
Clark Wire & Cable recently
introduced an enhanced and
expanded line of its HFC Series of
SMPTE 311M hybrid fibre camera
cables. Clark's original HFCTP
studio and field SMPTE 311M
camera cables are now claimed to
have greater durability and flexibility.
The new HFCTP fibre elements are
rated at three times their former
tensile strength. For improved
flexibility, the outer jacket of the
HFCTP uses a new TPE jacket
compound claimed to be abrasion
resistant and exceptionally flexible,
even at low temperature.

Fischer Connectors' push-pull
FiberOptic connector claims quick
and easy cleaning

Fischer Connectors' push-pull
FiberOptic connector is claimed
to be very quick and easy to
clean, an import consideration
for any optical interface. It uses a
removable monoblock mate adapter
and allows the unmated connectors
to be rinsed under water or in an
ultrasound bath. Fischer claims that
the connector has a high ingress
protection of IP68 when mated
and IP67 in unmated conditions.
Sprung optical contacts filter out
stress applied to the housings while
retaining the advantage of a pushpull connector.
Fujikura has introduced what
it claims is the world's smallest
single fibre fusion splicer. The 121
x 162 x 57 millimetre model 12S is
specifically designed for installation
in narrow spaces. Powered by a
lithium-ion battery, it is capable of

allowing more than 100 splices on
a single charge. The 12S is fully
compatible with the company's
FuseConnect series of 'splice-on'
connectors. A fixed v-groove and
dual-axis observation system are
provided. The unit also includes a

Gepco's VDM230LT ultra-lightweight
high-definition miniature coax cable

high-resolution LCD monitor, much
larger than the previous one, which
is designed to provide a clear image
of the fibre during indoor or outdoor
use. The 12S also has a redesigned
transit case which doubles as a
'place and splice' table.
Furukawa's Smart HDTV
Assembly Checker can be used
to test cables fitted with LEMO
(3K) as well as Tajimi OPS-series
connectors. It also can be used to
test other connectors if the user
purchases optional converters.
The checker can test up to one
kilometre long cable assemblies and
is powered by two AA cells.
Gepco's VDM230LT ultralightweight high-definition miniature
coax cable is intended for use in
mobile production trucks. It is
39% lighter than Gepco's existing
VDM230 miniature coax and claimed
to provide an average weight
saving of 900 kilogrammes per
full-size truck. The VDM230LT is
said to provide high-grade electrical
performance across the entire 4.5
GHz bandwidth. It incorporates
a low-loss gas-injected dielectric
to improve crush resistance
and provide exceptionally low
attenuation. For reduced weight, the
VDM230LT uses a copper central
conductor and a 100% bonded foil
with a polymer braid shielding. It is
available in a wide choice of colours.
Klotz' DABS (Digital Audio
Backbone System) is designed for
optical fibre transmission between
stage and the Front Of House mixing
desk. It handles up to 64 audio
channels. Signals are delivered
in MADI format over a multimode
optical fibre cable. Compatible
mixing desks can be connected
directly; for analogue mixers, an
optional FOH box is available
to convert the digital signals.
Transmission distances of up to two
kilometres are possible using Klotz
FibreLink fibre-optic cable.
