IBC - A Show Of Constant Evolution
The watchword for IBC2014 is change and looking
toward 'Content Everywhere' this key international
exhibition and conference is striving to move
forward with the times...

ne of the interesting things
about IBC, indeed one of the
factors that has helped it jockey its
way from minor Brighton tradeshow
to international leviathan over the
years, is that it's always evolving,
and for its 2014 iteration the show
itself has rung the changes quite
signiﬁcantly.
Yes, the Exhibition is still there
- in fact, bigger than ever - and
yes, the Conference is still taking
place, albeit in a significantly
restructured form, but for IBC itself
the overarching theme could well be
the celebration of the new.
Probably the biggest change lies
in the ditching of the old Connected
World hall in favour of the new IBC
Content Everywhere. In a sense
it's the same stuff - second screen,
device-based content, big data,
cloud-based services - but there's
been a lot of effort put in to try
and ensure that it feels genuinely
different, from the deployment of the
new contactless Touch & Connect
passes to the establishment of an
online community based round the
show. What's more, it's peripatetic;
Content Everywhere Europe being
the ﬁrst of three shows that will also
span MENA and LATAM as IBC bids
to grow beyond its European home.
The sort of product and
functionality you will see there is
exempliﬁed by the eTribez Voting
Platform which offers broadcasters
off-the-shelf advanced voting
and interactive capabilities for
their programming, as well as
opening up sources of revenue
through advertising, sponsorship
micropayments and various
gamiﬁcation methods. Or there's
Version 3.0 of the Metrological
Application Framework which
allows content providers to easily
integrate social media and red
button functionality within the
TV experience.

IBC is sinking a significant
amount of resources into making
IBC Content Everywhere a success,
so it's an area that should deﬁnitely
be worth checking out.
The Conference has been both
slimmed down and turbo charged:
over five days rather than the
previous six it will examine different
facets of the current industry on
each day in a bid to avoid the ﬁxture
congestion that clogged it up in
previous years. Day One asks the
question: 'Where does broadcast
ﬁt in an IP-centric world?' before
heading on to Day Two and an
examination of technological change
and the growing list of technologies
- from tapeless through the cloud
and on to Ultra HD - that are having
such an inﬂuence on the industry.
Day Three looks at the challenges
to the established order, Day Four
examines potential disruptors
in detail, while Day Five wraps it
all up. Spun out separately now
and running alongside it is a new
Disruptive Cinema conference
thread in the IBC Big Screen,
which promises to be a welcome
new innovation, while the free
Industry Innovations stream returns
too, one of the highlights, as ever,
being the curated What Caught My
Eye sessions looking at the best
products debuting on the show floor.
Which leads us nicely to the show
ﬂoor itself and the various products
that have been announced in the run
up to the show.
Many companies will, of course,
be making a huge noise about their
work out in Brazil on the World Cup
and, whatever your views on how
the tournament unfolded, there is
no denying that technically it was
a tour de force.
EVS' C-Cast was at the heart
of both the distributed remote
workﬂow in the country and the
enormous second screen efforts that
resulted, and a
productised
version 3.1 of
the World Cup
spec unit is
expected for
IBC.

Sony will, of course, be making a
huge noise about the 4K workﬂow
it developed for the end of the
tournament (in fact, 4K is going to be
a huge noise throughout the show as
it moves ever closer to established
production format).
SGL will bridge the two
manufacturers, showcasing
integration with both Sony Media
Backbone and a new collaborative
workﬂow with EVS: by integrating
FlashNet as part of the EVS sports
highlights capture process, an open
format copy is made on LTO and, as
a transportable format, this media
is available instantly to the wider
production team.
LiveU, which had a remarkable
World Cup (2650 hours transmitted
- 98% of them live - in the course of
10,156 total sessions, all equating
to over 40Tb of data) will be
showing its LU500. This is based
on the company's fourth-generation
patented bonding algorithms and
powered by a new multi-processor
video encoding engine, It's available
in both backpack and camera-mount
conﬁgurations, while LiveU Central,
its browser-based management
system for easy control and geotracking of all LiveU systems, feeds,
and apps from anywhere, will tell you
where it is if you mislay one.

version of Helm

Rascular will be exhibiting the
latest version of its ﬂagship product
Helm, which allows customers to
pick a wide range of equipment from
a wide range of manufacturers and
control it with a single, integrated
and highly customisable control
screen for a huge range of broadcast
applications. Support has been
added for Miranda - now Grass
Valley - Densite modular products,
Black Magic Videohubs, Grass
Valley native protocol routers and
Sierra Video's Aspen router range.
MultiDyne is planning to
demonstrate significant new
features for its SilverBACK family

MultiDyne is set to unveil new
features for its SilverBACK range

of camera-mounted ﬁbre transport
solutions, including a new operator
control panel that the company
says offers intuitive, user-friendly
controls and displays. Another
key demonstration will be of its
MultiDyne LightningSwitch, a
48x48 optical-to-optical routing
switch that simpliﬁes the routing of
ﬁbre-optic signals within broadcast
infrastructures by eliminating the
need for ﬁbre patch panels.
Visitors to Video Clarity's stand
will get to experience one of the
neater acronyms to debut at the
show, MOVIE (Motion-based
Video Integrity Evaluation), a new
perceptual test method for the
ClearView line of video quality
analysers. The company is billing
MOVIE as the new gold standard
for measuring video quality, giving
users the highest correlation to
human subjective quality available in
an automated measurement system.
DPA Microphones has a new
range of body worn microphones,
which overcome one of the
biggest challenges of all in modern
audio - how to give control of
mic placement to non-technical
actors or reality show contestants
without compromising sound
