Atomos Ninja Blade On The Red Carpet

A successful professional shoot is down to many factors, not least are the expertise and flair of the
filmmaker, backed by reliable equipment and an efficient post-production workflow...

or the last three years I have
done more commercial work
and I've made the choice to work
only with the tools that fit me.
My passion is really to shoot and
not spend too much time testing
all kinds of cameras and new gear.
Even at 42 years old, I feel like a
filmmaker of the new generation
with tools easy to use and
dedicated to help the creativity.
I had only taken delivery of the
Ninja Blade a couple of weeks
earlier but I decided to use it for
some corporate work I had to
do at Cannes.
My favourite aspect about
using Atomos gear is really the
compactness and simplicity of
their products. The Ninja Blade
is really perfect as an external
recorder which provides direct files
for post-production (ProRes 422)
but more than that the particular
challenge is when you use Atomos
products with HDSLR cameras,
such as the 5DMkIII or the 1D-C,
all the features of their impressive
screen allowed

me to have the benefits of the real
camcorders with focus peaking /
zebra / false colour and everything
becomes easier to shoot with
more security.
Atomos products are complete
in this way. Their products simplify
and help my productions to be
better on set! You could use
their recorders on any kind of
production from corporate to
broadcast, music videos and more.
If you want to simplify your
work even on 4K productions you
could use the Canon EOS1D-C
and record internally in 4K, then
record with the Atomos Samurai
or Ninja blade to create your proxy
files in Full HD and proceed to the
editing in Full HD ProRes 422 with
a conform to 4K at the end with
the native files. Of course when
the Atomos Shogun is released
later this year it will be even easier.
I should also mention I've
been using the Atomos Samurai
Blade on all my productions
since November 2013. With my
Canon EOS C300 I prefer to
use the BNC input/output of the
Samurai more than the HDMI but
with my EOS 1DC which has
only HDMI output the Ninja
Blade is enough.
Since 2008 with the
release of the 5DMKII, my
life has really changed. I
decided to be associated
only with companies
I can really trust and
my preferred current
workflow includes the
Canon EOS cinema
range with all the big
sensors cameras C100
Canon's EOS C300 (or
C100) are Devaud's
preference for his Full HD
productions

/ C300 / C500 & 1DC. Currently
I use EOS C500 and 1DC on all
4K productions and EOS C300 &
C100 on all Full HD productions.
I also use the full range of
Manfrotto heads and their
associated carbon tripods,
Cinevate and Kessler motorised
sliders, Defy gimbal G5, Pilot
Steadicam, Omnitracker Skater,
and Genus Mini Jib.
For sound recording I love the
range of Røde microphones and
for the lights Litepanels 1X1 and
Sola ENG flight kit and Cineroid
LM400 LED light. For accessories
I use Small HD monitors along
with the Atomos Ninja Blade and
Samurai Blade with high speed
Sandisk SSD and High speed
Sandisk CF and SD cards.
Nextodi Video storage and Deity
viewfinder and batteries.
For post-production, currently
the best for me is Adobe CC
with Premiere Pro, After Effects,
Photoshop and Speedgrade.
