brighter than a traditional 1 kelvin
Fresnel, they draw 189 watts and
run cool. An integrated DMX module
allows remote dimming and focusing.
The DMX module works with RJ45

Smooth dimming from 100% to zero
can be performed with no visible
colour shift. The light is ﬂicker-free at
any frame rate or shutter angle. The
Sola 9 and Inca 9 include eight-way
barndoors and a mains power supply.
LupoLight offers a variety of

lights ranging from the single-colour
Lupoled 350 to the dual colour
Lupoled 1120. Also available are
the Starlight, Quadrilight, Superlight
and Striplight studio ﬂuorescents,
in 3,200 or 5,400 kelvin colour
temperature, plus DMX control desks
handling 12/24 of 24.48 channels.
Lupolux, based in Italy, produces
a range of ﬂicker-free HMI and LED
lights in carbon-fibre housings.
This includes the 190 x 160 x 180
millimetre Dayled 650 50 watt and
210 x 260 x 230 millimetre Dayled
1000 90 watt dimmable LED Fresnel
heads. Both are available with 3,200
or 5,600 kelvin colour temperature
and can be powered from a 14
volt direct current source or 90 to
240 volt mains.
Nila's Varsa 75 watt LED light
is intended as a replacement
for a 400 watt HMI or a 600 watt
tungsten ﬁxture. It is the ﬁrst light

in the Nila line that can accept
power direct from a 10-18 volt
battery. Available in daylight or
tungsten colour temperatures, it
is designed to provide fully stable
colour reproduction through its full
range of output brightness. Features
include DMX control and an integral

PAG's Paglight is a three-in-one
on-camera interview light. Operating
from 12 to 14.8 volt direct current,
it can be ﬁtted with a LED head
delivering 900 lux of illumination at
two metres and consumes 11 watts.
The light can be focused from spot
to ﬂood. The lamp can be replaced
with HMI or halogen modules.
Photon Beard's Square One
is a rectangular 64 watt soft light
incorporating eight 12 inch x 5/8
inch diameter ﬂuorescent tubes. It
can be operated from a detachable
power supply or optional V mount
battery pack which will accept two

V mount batteries. The Square One
is dimmable via rotary control and
comes with a set of Osram tubes
balanced to tungsten or daylight
colour temperature. The detachable
stirrup has a 16 millimetre socket for
mounting in reduced space locations
such as car interiors. Also included
are removable barn doors which can
be used to house honeycomb grids,
diffusions panels and colour filter gel.
Rotolight introduced at IBC 2013
the Anova EcoFlood Version 2 bicolour LED and the Anova Solo
single colour ﬂoodlight. These are
available in daylight or tungsten
colour temperature with a 110
degree beam angle soft output or
50 degree beam. Intensity is just
under 6,000 lux at 90 centimetres.
Each Anova is flicker free and
allows DMX or wireless control via
the Rotolight Magic Eye HD app for
iPhone or iPad.
Videssence at IBC 2013
introduced the Vidnel 100 watt
LED Fresnel ﬁxture. This provides a
strong directional beam of adjustable
light with even coverage at 3,200 or
5,600 kelvin and allows ﬂicker-free
dimming without colour shift.
Visiolight's Zoom 6 ﬂicker-free
LED head is designed to create a
focusable light beam which can be
fully dimmed with no shift in colour
temperature. The light beam is
focusable from 15 to 60 degrees.
The head measures 18 x 6.5 x 6.5
centimetres (LWH), weighs 190
grammes and consumes 6 watts
from a battery or mains source.

Zacuto has decided not to pursue
the release of its PlaZma light and
will stay with its core specialties
of viewﬁnders, camera supports
and accessories.
Zylight's F8 LED Fresnel is
ruggedised for mobile use. It has a
colour rendering index of 97+ and
features shadow beam shaping
through barn doors, continuous
focusing and a smooth light ﬁeld.
Additional features include wireless
and DMX control plus a waterresistant IP54 rating. Available
with 3,200 or 5,600 kelvin colour
temperature, the Zylight F8 can be
powered from a mains adapter or a
standard 14.4 volt camera battery.
Local control such as dimming and
focus are provided on the rear of
the lamp head. The yoke mount
allows easy panning and tilting for
quick focusing.

Ethiopian 'People Of The Delta' Shoot Relies On Zylight F8 LED

nown professionally as Joey
L., Joey Lawrence is a still
photographer by trade and is still
relatively new to directing live action
projects.
The story of his new short ﬁlm,
'People of the Delta', was developed
from his ﬁve years of photography
work in Southern Ethiopia. Shot on
location in the region, the project

relied heavily on the Zylight F8 LED
Fresnel when conditions proved
problematic for HMI lighting.
'People of the Delta' is a narrative,
not a documentary, with a script
inspired from stories Lawrence
heard while working in the area.
Funded through a Kickstarter
campaign, the ﬁlm was shot with
an ARRI Alexa camera over about

four weeks in Ethiopia last fall and
is currently being edited.
Zylight's daylight-balanced
F8 LED Fresnel quickly became
Lawrence's light of choice for
'People of the Delta'. "It saved us
in so many situations," he said.
The script called for many scenes
inside huts, which are built from
sticks and have sunlight streaming
through the doorways. Director of
photography Sean Stiegemeier
prefers to shoot with natural light
and supplement with lighting
instruments, Lawrence explained,
and the F8 allowed the crew to get
more exposure and depth.
Lawrence also used an IS3c,
Zylight's LED wash light with
adjustable colour temperature and
custom soft box, as a ﬁll light and for
colour effects. For example, its builtin colour control, which produces
millions of colours without gels or
ﬁlters, was used to replicate ﬁrelight
in one scene.
The crew packed HMI lights for
the shoot, but some bulbs broke

during transport. Power was also a
significant issue.
In contrast, the battery-powered
F8 did not suffer damage from the
rough roads, and was invaluable
on location when power was
questionable.
"The F8 is way more robust. The
shoot would have taken forever with
a more traditional setup," Lawrence
said. "I was surprised how bright the
F8 was and how long it could last on
one battery. I never thought it could
do so much. It really is good stuff."
After 'People of the Delta'
wrapped, Joey L. stayed in the area
to complete a still photo shoot with
his Canon EOS 5D Mark III. Instead
of his usual strobe ﬂash, however,
he used the F8 to light his subjects.
"I don't shoot in broad daylight," he
explained. "I shoot at sunrise and
sunset. In those kinds of situations,
a constant light is so much nicer
than using a strobe. You get an
instant preview, and you need way
less setup time and test shots."
