Broadcom Enables Ultra HD
Broadcast Of World Cup

roadcom Corporation, a global
leader in semiconductor
solutions for wired and wireless
communications, has enabled live
Ultra HD satellite broadcasts of the
2014 World Cup in collaboration
with Globosat, a multichannel
cable and satellite TV service in
Brazil, and Elemental, a supplier of
software-deﬁned video solutions for
multiscreen content delivery.
The special live broadcast of
the final three matches of the
World Cup, made available by
Globosat to selected subscribers
and Pay-TV operators in Brazil,
demonstrates growing interest in
Ultra HD technology, which can
deliver 4x the resolution of traditional
1080p60 HD displays.
"Our collaboration with Globosat
and Elemental to bring a live Ultra
HD broadcast of the World Cup to
viewers validates the demand for
Ultra HD in 2014 and beyond," said

Sony is delivery partner to
FIFA and host broadcaster
HBS for the 2014 World Cup.
The Quantel GE2 system, which
includes two Pablo Rio 4KO colour
correction and ﬁnishing systems
sharing storage and workﬂow via
a GenePool, will be used for the
production of fast-turnaround 4K
highlights packages.

ORF Teams With
Viz Libero
Broadcom collaborated with Globosat and Elemental to deliver live
4K satellite broadcasts to sports fans across South America

The special broadcast is the ﬁrst

to deliver market-leading Ultra HD
(4K) display resolution speeds of 60
frames per second (4Kp60), which
provides 2x the speeds of current
displays for ﬂuid, life-like movement
and includes a 10-bit Rec 2020 colour
standard to deliver deeper, richer
colour gradation.

Sennheiser Takes Centre Stage In Brazil
n Brazil HBS, for the ﬁrst time, used
Sennheiser's new Esfera surround
microphone system, to capture the
World Cup action.
Esfera produces complete 5.1
surround sound from the signal of a
compact stereo microphone.
A total of 36 Esfera microphones
(SPM 8000) recorded the sound in
the 12 stadia; in the International
Broadcast Centre, two Esfera
processing units (SPB 8000) were
then used to produce 5.1 sound from
the stereo signals.
The sound of volleys and goal
kicks were captured using around
300 shotgun microphones - including
MKH 8070 long gun microphones

use Viz Libero, Vizrt's sports analysis
system, for the World Cup in Brazil.
ORF's team of experts will comb
football content to find the best
scenes to analyse in Viz Libero.
A close cooperation is fostered
between the experts, the journalists
and the Viz Libero operator, provided
by sports graphic company On Air
Media Solutions, to deliver high-end
sports analysis to viewers.
