Focusing On The Latest In Cameras

Visitors to the recent NAB were confronted with a truly remarkable array of new cameras...

to connect to a live production
switcher with a single cable.

t wasn't just the 'big' names that
presented their wares. As a result,
choosing the right model to meet all
of the user's needs is not as simple
as might be expected. So, just what
options are in the frame?

AJA Video Systems showcased
a new professional camera called
CION which has the capacity to
shoot at 4K/UltraHD and 2K/HD
resolutions. AJA pioneered
lens-to-post Apple
ProRes workﬂows with
the introduction of the Ki
Pro product line in 2009,
and CION builds on this facility
by offering in-camera recording
directly to the Apple ProRes family
of codecs - including 12-bit 444 - for
image capture. CION provides the
ability to output 4K raw data at up
to 120 fps via 4x 3G-SDI outputs,
plus it can record directly to AJA Pak
SSD media at up to 60 frames per
second. When recording in HD or
2K, the image is oversampled from
the full 4K sensor, retaining focal

length as well as providing a detailed
image. A built-in ﬁlter combines an
optical low pass ﬁlter to eliminate
unwanted aliasing and moiré with
an infrared cut ﬁlter to produce
appropriate colours. The camera's
menu parameters are also remotely
conﬁgurable via a web interface and
can be accessed through any web
browser via a LAN connection.

grading with preloaded 3D LUTs

ARRI has revealed its highly
anticipated AMIRA documentarystyle camera that includes 200
fps slow motion recording, and incamera grading with preloaded 3D
LUTs. Users can also custom
build their own 3D LUTs
in exter nal grading
systems, load them into
the camera during prep,
and modify in-camera
while shooting. Adobe
Premiere Pro CC is the ﬁrst
non-linear editing system
supporting the colour management
of AMIRA QuickTime ProRes
files. Premiere can apply look
ﬁles (including 3D LUTs) that are

included in AMIRA ﬁles and convert
automatically from Log C to REC
709 within an easy, fail-safe system.
Blackmagic's Studio Camera is
a new model speciﬁcally designed
for live production and is available in
1080 HD and Ultra HD models.
According to Blackmagic
Design, customers often
need to use cameras
designed for general video
production when it comes
to live work - but many of
the 'live' features are missing.
Those problems are overcome with
this new camera. Inside the tough,
yet lightweight, magnesium alloy
body, is a very large 10" viewﬁnder,

considerable interest in its new
Q3 compact robotic head. "Q-Ball
gives the freedom to place cameras
literally anywhere," commented
Camera Corps Managing Director,
Laurie Frost. "Up to 100 remote
heads could be operated from a
single panel. Q-Ball2 introduced
the ability to store presets in
non-volatile memory. Q3 adds
a raft of refinements including
twice the zoom range, a new
high-performance imager with
nearly double the sensitivity, ultrasmooth pan/tilt/zoom, the ability to
intercut with studio cameras, and,
by popular request, a cue light. Q3
can be controlled via a wide range of
serial data formats including IP and
our own audio-based data system."
Q3 is compatible with all highdefinition and intermediatedeﬁnition video formats currently
in common use, including 1080 or
720 progressive or interlaced at 60,
50, 30, 25 or 24 frames per second.
Grass Valley has introduced
four new models that build on the
success of its LDX Series of cameras
- the LDX HiSpeed (LDX HS) and LDX
Compact HiSpeed (LDX Compact
HS) 3X super slow-motion cameras
and the LDX XtremeSpeed (LDX XS)
and LDX Compact XtremeSpeed
(LDX Compact XS) 6X ultra slowmotion cameras.
