Game Changing

W

hile it may sound overdramatic,
innovate or die is very much
the mantra by which dynamic
m a r ke t- l e a d i n g te c h n o l o g y
companies live.
It's with that in mind that LiveU
introduced both a unique new
product at NAB 2014 as well as
announcing relationships with
new technology partners Network
Innovations and lakatoo. The
company also revealed quite how
much the recently launched LU500
has moved the world of cellular
uplinking to the next level.
With the launch of DataBridge
at NAB, the company has added
powerful new functionality to its
broadcast offerings and developed a
standalone product for data transfer
and Internet usage. This is designed
to provide reporters with the ability
to edit content onsite, send back
their story to the editorial desk
faster and more easily, and facilitate
multiple Internet applications as part
of a seamless workﬂow in the field.
There will be two conﬁgurations.
For both, the technology provides
aggregated bandwidth for uploading
and downloading data. The ﬁrst
conﬁguration was demonstrated at
NAB 2014 as part of LiveU's new
LU500 uplink unit. The data mode
operates seamlessly alongside live
transmission and store & forward via
LU500's GUI. DataBridge enables
users to download content from the
cloud, add other material and then
transfer the ﬁnal edited ﬁle back with
a simple touch of a button via a fast
and reliable uplink. It also enables
general Wi-Fi web access for other
devices. This allows reporters to
create far more comprehensive
reports in the ﬁeld and send them
back to the newsroom.
The other announcements
concerned partnerships with
Network Innovations (formerly
GMPCS), a leading provider of
satellite services, and lakatoo,
specialist in video delivery
and management.
With the Network Innovations
partnership, LiveU's LU-Lite live
video transmission software is
now fully integrated and certiﬁed
to work over the Inmarsat BGAN
Network. LiveU's LU-Lite bonding
software can transmit live using up
to two bonded BGAN HDR devices,
from any location, at latency as low
as 1.4 seconds.

that LiveU is now able to offer
customers a built-in lakatoo
workﬂow in its products for the
fast, simple and secure upload
and transfer of all large SD and
HD video files.
Top television network and
broadcast groups, such as NBC
Universal, are already using
LiveU and lakatoo's proprietary
technologies in their newsgathering
operations. The integrated solution
facilitates collaboration and highspeed delivery of unlimited amounts
of high-quality video files over
available bandwidth with reduced
transmission costs. The lakatoo
video management platform will
be integrated with LiveU's uplink
units and the LiveU Central cloudbased central management system
for live transmission, ﬁle transfer and
store and forward.
With innovation part of our DNA,
it would be remiss of us not to
mention the success of our recentlylaunched LU500 uplink unit at the
Sochi Winter Olympics and Super
Bowl. Weighing only 1kg (2.2lbs), the
LU500 supports up to 14 network
links including six-eight internal
bonded connections. "We were
very happy to discover that with
the LU500 there was no trade-off
between performance and size!"

carry and control. We immediately
sent it on the road to San Antonio
to cover the ﬁrst round of March
