NEP Launches ND1 Mobile Unit

EP has launched ND1, a
landmark new mobile television
production unit designed and built
primarily to support NBC Sports'
coverage of Sunday Night Football
America's most watched primetime show in each of the past three
years.
ND1 is the latest result of NEP's
Next-Generation Mobile Unit design
initiative, which includes groundbreaking innovations for creating
facilities that are highly flexible,
efﬁcient, and scalable. One such
innovation is a revolutionary
workstation design platform, which
enables almost any job function
to be performed from almost any
workspace in the truck at the
push of a button.
Ken Goss, Senior Vice President,
Remote Operations and Production
Planning, NBC Sports Group,

together to push remote broadcast
technology forward."
ND1 consists of four 53-foot
double-expanding trailers with
seating for more than 75 operating
positions. Boasting a completely
1080p-capable infrastructure and
the largest routing switcher available
for a mobile production facility in the
US, ND1 is conﬁgured to support a
25% increase in production levels
into the future.
T h e u n i t 's 1 0 0 % f i b re optic connectivity supplies all
interconnections between the
trailers and from the trailers to the
stadium venue.
EVS XT3 media servers support
tapeless, fully digital recording
workflows, with extensive
embedded audio support for 16
channels. In addition to the Evertz
routing switcher, ND1 includes a
Grass Valley Kayenne Elite 9 M/E
production switcher and Calrec
Artemis and Apollo audio consoles.

As a member of NEP's family

of next-generation mobile units,
ND1 represents a completely new
approach to design, construction
techniques, and materials - resulting
in trailers that offer more interior
space while taking up a smaller
footprint in the compound.
NEP engineers used advanced,
computerised stress analysis tools
from the aircraft industry to design
a trailer that is stronger, stiffer, and
20% lighter.

double audio channel capacity to
256 channels/card and reduce
power consumption. Designed to
fully integrate Cheetah 3G I/O video
signals with Cheetah DRS audio
routing distribution systems.
The International Broadcast
Center (IBC) in Sochi, Russia,

featured a Cheetah
864XR coax and ﬁbre HD video
routing switcher, which is an integral
part of the system that provided
live and pre-recorded video feeds
for local distribution, as well as
satellite feeds to the United States
for re-broadcast. Designed for multiformat routing needs and supporting
signals up to 1080p/60, the router is
populated with 800x800 BNC and
64x64 ﬁbre I/O in a 41 RU frame.
The system also includes PESA's
UCI2000 controller card to allow
third-party control.
Other PESA customers at the
Winter Games included the Korean
Broadcast System, which used a
system that is similar to its setup
from the Summer Games in London
in 2012, including two Cheetah
digital video routers, two DRS digital
audio routers connected to the main
IBC routing system.

smart devices, PESA Xstream
Live integrates the PESA Xstream
C58 with a downloadable mobile
app to produce a unique viewing
experience. Social networking is
tightly integrated into PESA Xstream
Live, allowing users to interact in
real-time during an event.
The solution also includes
revenue generating ad insertion
capabilities for targeted advertising
and messaging.
