PROVY's Commercial Director, Martin Junek, fields our
questions on media management solutions, budgeting
restrictions, and recent deployments ...

InBroadcast: How is your
company adapting to meet
customer demands?
Martin Junek: This is not just a
business for us as every member
of staff is fully committed to
the long-term development
and improvement of our media
management solutions. Fortunately,
many of our programmers take it
as their personal pride to implant
their clever ideas in the product.
Of course, the clients expect
everything for nothing whilst we
try to satisfy them and still remain
profitable. It does not mean a
lowering of professional standards
or personnel within our organisation.
We leave this up to some cheaper
competition. The major challenge
is how to please the customers
with new sophisticated features
without any price increase. In
case of software solutions, we can
achieve it only through paid support
services. Sometimes, it is mission
impossible to convince clients of the
importance of a support agreement.
InB: What criteria are
broadcasters using to select
products?
MJ: Sad to say that price has
overridden quality in the last few
years. There are several reasons
for that. In the public sector,
tender regulations usually limit
broadcasters' possibilities to
choose the preferred technologies.
Sometimes, a little self-censorship
remains in purchasing departments
when they deﬁne tender conditions
to maintain equal opportunities for all
potential suppliers. In addition, there
are always budgeting restrictions.
These reasons may contribute
to the broadcasters purchasing
something they really did not want.
The situation is somehow easier in
the case of private broadcasters.
They are usually limited by their
investment or operating budgets
only. We hope that common sense
will prevail and broadcasters will
be choosing proven and reliable
suppliers, and stop buying promises
no matter how attractive they are.
InB: Which territories are showing
particular activity?

the last few months. Although we
have invested many brain-years
in the development of our media
management software and this
product simply cannot be cheap,
the most attractive features for
the clients are efﬁciency and order
that we introduce in broadcasting
organisations. Even when compared
against the labour costs in those
regions, the time-saving features of
our software still remain attractive.
Specifically our advertisement
space selling module gains more
and more popularity. In all cases,
we bring order to workﬂows and
improved efﬁciencies.
InB: Any product innovations
ahead that you can discuss?
MJ: Continual improvements of
our workﬂow automation features
plus further investment into

physical media management are
our ongoing priorities. We invest a
lot of our development resources
in MAM with archiving features and
device connectors. We installed
our first MAM solution in 1997
and since that time we have been
developing this module focusing
primarily on television archivists;
in other words we create a
professional media management
tool but not post-production gear.
Recently we have transferred
the client application into
DotNet framework. This major
technology improvement results
in a modern and pleasant graphic
user interface. Soon, we will also
announce substantial innovations
in our resource management
module which is popular even as
a standalone solution. Another
area of interest is our non-linear

InB: Can you describe some of
your recent deployments?
MJ: We have recently scored
successes in Europe and Asia. In
Europe, we implement our media
production management solution
right in the European Parliament's
audio visual facility which provides
services to all national broadcasters
reporting about EU's activities
from Brussels and Strasbourg.
Another
interesting
implementation project that we
have just started in Switzerland
covers broadcast planning and
content management for a regional
network of private cable and
satellite channels. This year we will
implement only the core PROVYS
functionality as the ﬁrst step to build
an efﬁcient and secure environment
and to help the broadcaster to
meet tough business objectives.
In the future, each extension of
the core will open new horizons
to accomplish ever increasing
requirements of the industry. Like
the famous, multi-function Swiss
Army Knife, the Swiss client will
be using more and more PROVYS
blades as the network grows.
In Turkey and Indonesia our
company currently works for local
telecommunication operators
who extended their portfolio by
adding media and entertainment
services. This is not our first
experience in the telco industry.
We have already installed several
PROVYS solutions in
large telecommunication
operations and they
have always appreciated
our skills gained in the
broadcast industry. One
of the most successful
software modules which
are particularly interesting
for telco operators is
our advertisement sales
solution. It streamlines
processes in any content
delivery operation where
the advertisement
insertion is essential.
