NAB 2014 - Continuing The Digital
Broadcast Technology Evolution
A look ahead to some of the latest technologies that will feature at NAB 2014 in Las Vegas...

here is, of course, no such thing
as a truly quiet NAB, but if the
early signs are anything to go by
this year's edition of the tradeshow
in the desert does look to be more a
case of building on what has gone
before rather than introducing
anything radically new.
The headlines pretty much write
themselves: 4K will drop in cost and
expand to ﬁll the remaining niches
and gaps in the production chain;
IPTV solutions will be increasingly
important to the industry, as well as
anything to do with the companion
screen and taking advantage of
social media; and the cloud's
march into the centre of production
architecture will continue apace.
There may be surprises, of course,
but few will be of the standard of
Belden buying Grass Valley in the
run up to the show. Whether it will
have been done enough in advance
of the show for some interesting new
products to be on display from the
expanded company, we shall have
to wait and see. In the meantime,
also in the Belden stable, is the new
Miranda NVISION 8500 IP Gateway
cards convert and packetise realtime, uncompressed, baseband
video for distribution over Ethernet
networks. Once SDI signals are
packetised, reasons the company,
they can easily be distributed
rack-to-rack, truck-to-truck,
between ﬂoors of a facility or even
between buildings or campuses,

over IP networks.
Cloud-based workflows will
of course be a major draw at
NAB, and Front Porch Digital
will be making noise about its
cloud-based disaster recovery
service, LYNXdr. It's not just about
getting your data back in case of
catastrophe, however, the company
are also claiming that moving to
the cloud can reduce the total
cost of ownership of digital asset
management for content owners,
because users pay only for what
they use when they use it. Off-site
data backup in virtual machines is
much less costly than on-premises
servers and allows for instant
increases in storage capacity
with minimal or no effort from
the IT team, it reasons adroitly.
ChyronHego arrives in Vegas
with PowerClips, a 1RU, twochannel standard model or a
2RU, four-channel fully optioned
production clip server. Billed as an
ideal system for the playback of
segments such as news bumpers,
station promos, and coming ups,
it features a tab-view UI that
allows the operator to layout all
command and control panels
according to their operational
requirements. HeliPaint, meanwhile,
is what's dubbed an 'in-the-air'
telestration system for enhancing
live aerial coverage straight from
the chopper, giving aerial reporters
easy-to-use tools to enhance

coverage which can also usefully
lock graphics in place even as the
camera moves.
JVC will be highlighting the GYHM850 and GY-HM890 ProHD
shoulder-mount camcorders,
first introduced at BVE in
London. Complemented by a
new interchangeable Fujinon
20x autofocus zoom lens,
the company claims
that the cameras

deliver outstanding full HD image
capture and delivery, while the
built-in streaming engine, FTP
and GSM connectivity allows live
HD transmission directly from the
camera without requiring additional
encoding hardware. The GY-HM890
is also designed for use as an HD
studio camera or multi-camera ﬁeld
production camera.
Talking of cameras, in ofﬁcial news
from the company, Panasonic is set
to launch its ﬁrst handheld ENG
camera with wireless connectivity,
enabling recorded content to
be shared almost instantly and
accessed from anywhere. The
AJ-PX270 removes the need for
traditional video uplink, making it
suitable for the growing live stream
and freelance news gathering
market and enabling a wireless
production workﬂow via LAN, with
additional 3G/4G/LTE application

added in Q3 2014. In unofﬁcial news,
it looks like the new 4K Varicam was
in use out at Sochi, so expect an
ofﬁcial unveiling in Vegas...probably.
Away from 4K, with cell
transmission back to base an
increasingly popular option,
especially in ENG, the ruggedised
Dejero LIVE+ 20/20 Transmitter that
transmits HD or SD over multiple
bonded networks at sub-second
latency will probably garner some
attention. It's part of an extensive
range from the company that
includes the LIVE+ Mobile App
for iOS or Android and the
Dejero + Nucomm Connect
Live transmitter, billed as a
'next-gen' camera-mounted
bonded cellular and microwave
system. Back at base all this can
feed into the LIVE+ Broadcast
Server, a two-channel, 3-U rackmounted server that receives realtime genlocked video from multiple
LIVE+ systems.
