Atomos Samurai Blade For 'Pop-Up'

have been using Atomos products
since the earliest incarnations of
the Blade, better known as just
the Samurai. I've used both the
old and new units, as external or
proxy recorders, in short films,
music videos, and most recently,
a feature ﬁlm," Clinton explained.
Clinton is currently shooting an
Australian feature ﬁlm 'Pop-Up',
where three stories are interwoven
about several people affected
by a single event. In the ﬁrst, an
unemployed father ﬁnds a camera
containing a photo of a woman's
face. Smitten, he tracks her down.
The second concerns a recently
immigrated woman who attempts
to overcome her homesickness
by giving away home-made popup cards. The last story involves
a sleep-deprived theatre director
seeking deadly revenge on a
scathing critic.
The production company has just
completed principal photography
using the Blade to record HD
proxies in ProRes straight out of
the RED Scarlet.
"Timecode synced like a charm

and record trigger worked a treat
with the RED," Clinton said. "The
Blade was also rigged up by our
camera department to serve as a
monitor on a Steadicam sled, while
recording HD proxies!
"The Samurai Blade has handy
features that make it an incredibly
versatile piece of kit. My favourite
aspects of the Blade would have
to be the new and improved
resolution of the screen, and the
peaking, waveform and vectorscope
parameters. The unit also allows
me to record data while doubling
as a director or camera assistant's
monitor, or even a main monitor."
Clinton added: "I shoot primarily
high-end corporate work where
clients want ProRes or high quality
proxy ﬁles, and the Blade is so multifunctional and versatile, it allows
you to overcome oversights on set.
For example, if you forget, say, your
monitor or an external recorder, the
Blade covers both tasks admirably.
More importantly, it's great that
you can insert marker points into
your footage within the unit. It's
like 'trimming the fat', saving you

time in post.
"'Pop-Up' is being shot with a
RED Scarlet camera package
that enables me to shoot 4K RAW
internally within the camera, while it
simultaneously records HD ProRes
ﬁles to the Blade. This allows me to
give the director something more
user-friendly. The high quality

ProRes ﬁles can also be utilised to
cut the ﬁlm more efﬁciently, then be
linked back later to the original RAW
source files."
Clinton concluded: "I love this unit.
I couldn't do without it on set ever
again. It's too good to leave out of
your shooting arsenal."
