What's New In Video Production Lighting
Shining a light on the latest developments in the realms of broadcast and film lighting technology...

demonstrates the almost
wholesale conversion to LEDs
which the broadcast industry has
undergone since this technology
was pioneered by a few innovative
manufacturers nearly ten years ago.
LED lights offer many advantages
over the ﬁlament-based variety. They
are ﬂesh-friendly, energy efﬁcient,
robust, compact, acoustically
silent (no fan and no hum), and
'maintenance-free' (meaning, until
recently, that you could not replace
a defective bulb). The ﬂesh-friendly
aspect of LEDs is one of its greatest
assets; on-screen performers do not
enjoy being prematurely wrinkled by
hot stage lights.
ADB's ALC4-2 is a modular LED
red/green/blue plus white ﬂicker-free
dimmable lighting ﬁxture designed
to match the light output and colour
rendition of a 1,250 watt tungsten
halogen source. Seven calibrated
colour temperatures are selectable
via remote DMX control. The beam
angle can be adapted by choosing
one of the optional reﬂectors. The
unit is compact, self-contained
and can easily be moved around
the studio or venue. ALC4-2
lights can be interchanged with
previous ALC4 models when set to
compatibility mode.
Canara Lighting has been in
the business of stage and studio
lighting systems for over 40 years.
The company has a manufacturing
facility located at Mangalore, India.
Its product range includes LED
Fresnels, LED panels, LED ENG
kits, halogen and HMI lighting
fixtures, motorised and fixed
rigging/grid, light bars, dimmers,
consoles, chroma and curtains.
Recent new additions are 100 to
400 watt LED Fresnels, 90 watt LED
panels and 60 watt LED ENG lights,
available with tungsten or daylight
colour temperature.
Cineo Lighting's 500 watt
TruColor HSTM soft light uses
remote phosphor technology and
is claimed to exceed the output of
a traditional 2 kilowatt incandescent
soft light. Several units can be
plugged into a single 15 amp
circuit. Rather than using traditional
diffusion to soften the light source,
light is emitted from the panels at
the front of the ﬁxture and radiates
equally over a 160 degree radius.

Cineo Lighting has co-operated with
Intematix Corporation to deliver a
3,200 kelvin colour temperature
with a colour rendering index of
98. Interchangeable phosphor
panels allow the same ﬁxture to
output 5,600 kelvin daylight with
a CRI of 94. Additional colour
temperatures are available to match
other light conditions, including
panels optimised for chroma key.
The power supply includes local
and DMX control.
DeSisti's LED MAGIS 40W is a
DMX-controlled compact Fresnel
lens spotlight using an LED array.
It includes a number of parameters
that can be set locally and is
available with tungsten or daylight
balanced colour temperature, both
in manual or pan/tilt pole-operated
versions (the latter incorporating
manual focus control). The lighting
performance of the tungsten
balanced version is comparable
with a medium to full ﬂood 500
watt tungsten Fresnels. The
daylight balanced version performs
similarly to a 200 watt HMI Fresnel.
The ﬁxture combines the classical
SPOT/FLOOD beam control
with a barn door.
Dexel, represented in the UK by
LCC Photon, recently introduced the
Model 53/20 120 millimetre diameter
Fresnel LED light. This has 100
watts of power consumption and
a 6,000 kelvin colour temperature.
Mains powered, it is designed to
be comparable with incandescent
lamps of 650 to 800 watts. It
incorporates a manual intensity
control and an interface for DMX
signal control from external digital
consoles. The light is ﬂicker-free and
fully dimmable variable focus ﬂood/
spot with a 120 mm diameter lens.

FloLight's MicroBeam 1024LP
possesses all of the features of the
MicroBeam 1024 but packaged into
low proﬁle rectangular housing. It
incorporates 1,024 LEDs and can be
placed in many areas that its large
square counterpart cannot, such as
rooms with a low ceiling.
K5600 Lighting's Alpha 18K is a
23-inch proﬁle Fresnel lamp head
weighing 57.7 kilogrammes. It can
be used with a ceramic glass lens or
standard 24-inch Fresnel. The lamp
can be placed very close to its quartz
composite moulded reﬂector. The
light output from this new reﬂector is
nearly 15% higher than that of earlier
models and is claimed to add a
softer and smoother lighting pattern
compared with the conventional
aluminium reflectors. The small
diameter reﬂector is also claimed
to allow better heat circulation. A
new back bulkhead design ensures
that operating temperatures remain
within speciﬁcation in any critical
position, including straight down.
A double suspension system (one
to the lamp heat sinks and one to
the chassis support) makes the
Alpha 18K lamp less fragile to rough
handling during transportation.
Litepanels Hilio is a small-footprint
LED fixture capable of emitting
daylight-balanced illumination
over a seven metre distance. It can
be dimmed manually or via DMX
from 100% to zero with no visible
change in colour temperature. An
optional HC ﬁeld lighting package
includes a battery adapter plate
allowing two hot-swappable Anton/
Bauer batteries to be snapped onto
the back of the Hilio ﬁxture. The
package also includes two Dionic
HC batteries capable of delivering
up to 10 amps of continuous current.
A pair of 91 watt-hour batteries can
operate the 115 watt Hilio at full
output continuously for nearly two
hours. An Anton/Bauer twin charger
is also provided.
LupoLight offers a variety of
LED panel video production studio

lights ranging from the singlecolour Lupoled 350 to the dual
colour Lupoled 1120. Also available
are the Starlight, Quadrilight,
Superlight and Striplight studio
fluorescents, in 3,200 or 5,400
kelvin colour temperature, plus
DMX control desks handling 12/24
of 24.48 channels.

K5600's Alpha 18K boasts an
improved reﬂector

Lupolux, based in Italy, produces
a range of ﬂicker-free HMI and LED
lights in carbon-fibre housings.
This includes the 190 x 160 x 180
millimetre Dayled 650 50 watt and
210 x 260 x 230 millimetre Dayled
1000 90 watt dimmable LED Fresnel
heads. Both are available with 3,200
or 5,600 kelvin colour temperature
and can be powered from a 14
volt direct current source or 90 to
240 volt mains.
Nila's Varsa 75 watt LED light
is intended as a replacement for
a 400 watt HMI or a 600 watt
tungsten ﬁxture. It is the ﬁrst light
in the Nila line that can accept
power direct from a 10-18 volt
battery. Available in daylight or
tungsten colour temperatures, it
is designed to provide fully stable
colour reproduction through its full
range of output brightness. Features
include DMX control and an integral
