Improving OTT Deployment

o you need speed, flexibility,
reliability, cost management
and top notch strategic thinking
in readying your OTT services?
Par tnering with a managed
services provider will save valuable
time and resources.
In markets where multiscreen, TV
Everywhere OTT propositions are
already established, broadcasters,
pay TV providers and other MVPDs
are aware of the fast rate of
consumer adoption. Where services
have proved popular - as with
Viasat's offers in northern Europe,
or Comcast's propositions in the US
- operators are experimenting with
and planning next-generation offers
and new monetisation opportunities
involving additional second screen
interactivity and pay per view offers.
What's more, as broadband
penetration and connection speeds
grow in emerging markets there is
a correspondingly strong growth in
connected TV and mobile device
sales. In short order, OTT will
become an ever more significant
part of the broadcasting landscape
across the world.
Hence, creating strategic,
differentiated plans for OTT and
multiscreen TV everywhere is a
commercial imperative for a growing
number of companies. However
launching or extending an OTT,

broadband-delivered video service,
while meeting the customers
expectation of a guaranteed,
round the clock, high quality
experience, is a complex affair. It
requires significant resources and
specialist expertise.
Companies planning to do this
are faced with a choice: build or buy.
Invest internally for infrastructure,
technology and skilled, experienced
personnel, or, work with a service
provider that can fill the gaps, big
or small. While there are benefits to
be gained from in-house creation
and deployment of a new OTT
service, an operator seeking to
create a strong proposition within
a short timeframe needs to have
the required technical and logistical
capabilities at its disposal from day
one. Often, these are available only
through a service provider.

Managed Services

Bridge the gap between longterm aspiration and immediate
capabilities: Using outsourced
expertise, capabilities and
technology to launch the service,
while an operator builds its
internal capacity is a proven
bridging option. For some
operators, for specific projects,
working with a managed services
provider proves to be a valid,
lower risk and more cost-effective
in the long term than running
such a service in-house;

concentrate on core
business activities
rather than diverting
resources and
management
to
non-core
technologies
and expertise.
Companies can
select as few or
as many of the
capabilities and
service options that
a managed services
provider offers, rather
than being compromised
or constrained by internal
infrastructure and capabilities;

Operators can develop their
service on a scale, at a cost and
timetable most appropriate to

business goals and resources.
Companies will only ever pay for
the infrastructure, technology and
expertise that are actually used.
OTT solutions can be offered with
the cost-effective pilot launch to
a smaller number of users. Built
internally, some components
of the infrastructure, such as
adaptive bit rate encoding
facilities, may be prohibitively
expensive for a pilot or smaller
scale solution. Managed service
providers can provide this
advanced capability even for a
small-scale offer;
3. E n h a n c e s t r a t e g i c a n d
operational flexibility: An operator
working with a managed service
provider benefits from improved
strategic agility and increased
operational flexibility. If a strategy,
service change or rapid scaling
up or down is required, this can
be achieved more effectively,
rapidly and at lower cost than
would be the case if the operation
were being run in-house.
4. First to deploy new technologies:
Gain a competitive edge with early
adoption of new technologies,
at lower risk to operations. For
example, there is not yet a clear
projected winner in adaptive bit
rate streaming technologies. As
they evolve, with the help of a
managed services provider, an
operator can flexibly deploy
the latest technology without
risking capital write-offs and
investments.
5. Immediate access to skilled
and experienced staff: Internal
recruitment and time-toproductivity for a new team can
take months, delaying effective
OTT building and deployment.
In addition to technical ability,
managed services personnel

have worked in a wide range of
OTT environments and overcome
diverse technical and practical
problems. For an OTT operator,
the opportunity to leverage
this depth of expertise can
make the difference in between
success and failure.

User Satisfaction

Competing OTT managed services
are just a mouse click away. A
managed services provider must
be able to differentiate themselves.
Make sure that your provider can:
* Demonstrate state-of-the art
user experience tools. Support
solutions should integrate
monitoring, notification, ticket
c re a t i o n a n d e s c a l a t i o n
functions seamlessly;
* Provide highly trained staff armed
with the requisite technical
expertise and client-specific,
solution-specific knowledge to
resolve problems swiftly;
* Guarantee a proactive support
function, able to identify
and begin risk mitigation for
issues that can threaten an
OTT business;
* Show a true commitment to
continuous improvement in
service provision. And, not just
by pointing to its use of the ITIL
framework. Demonstration of a
comprehensive process that uses
a risk register, risk reviews, user
feedback, technology reviews,
and a service improvement
plan, agreed through dialogue
with the client.
At every stage, an operator should
be satisfied that the provider is
doing everything possible to deliver
maximum value - and is considering
how it might enhance its services
further in future.
