applying audio processing as required.
Several new features aimed at the
post-production market include DPX
image sequence input; Red RAW
input; DolbyE audio encoding; 2425hz audio speed up.
The Envivio Halo Experience
Server, launched at NAB, facilitates
advanced applications such as timeshifted TV and network DVR, targeted
advertisement insertion, social and
personalised TV, all without requiring
signiﬁcant changes in the existing
multi-screen infrastructure.
In July the company conﬁrmed that
Ukranian pay-TV operator in Volia was

using its Muse transcoders for a new
internet TV services, encompassing
130+ channels available to more than
1.5 million households.
At IBC, Envivio demonstrated
its solutions for 4K and HEVC,
personalised TV Anytime services,
and its new Envivio Guru network
management system.
Also at IBC2013, Haivision debuted
a solution designed to optimise
streaming performance across all
network types. Called Haivision’s
SRT (Secure Reliable Transport), this
new technology is an end-to-end
transport framework that provides
security, resiliency and dynamic
endpoint adjustment based on realtime network conditions.
“SRT addresses the challenges
associated with reliable transport
of content across the internet by
providing a secure, reliable transport
technology that is highly network
efﬁcient and cost effective,” explains
Peter Maag, CMO. “SRT also
eliminates the need to rely on satellite
links for backhaul and can replace
the need for dedicated networks for

point to point facility connections.”
In the initial implementation,
Haivision’s Makito X series and
KulaByte, Haivision’s software-based
encoders will feature SRT technology
to allow for transport of high quality,
low latency video across Internet
connections.
Also Haivision announced Viper
2.0, an appliance that gives users
an easy way to capture, stream,
review, distribute and publish rich,
multi-stream high-deﬁnition content.
Designed for non-technical users,
Viper’s new, intuitive user interface is
simple and easy to use with improved
touch screen capabilities and new
localisation features, supporting
many new languages, including
French, Japanese and Korean. With
Viper’s RTMP support, users can
now send video content to streaming
servers such as Adobe Media Server
as well as popular CDNs.
The latest version also offers
users a control API to allow thirdparty devices to remotely manage
Viper’s streaming, recording and
publishing functions.

Satellite Distribution Vital For Digital Cinema Transmission

A

s a m e d i u m f o r te l e communications and television
broadcasting, satellite technology
has proven itself over many decades
of reliable service around the globe.
And within the past several years,
satellite has emerged as the goto technology for the worldwide
transmission of digital cinema
content and live events.
Through the use of satellite
distribution, audience members
can expect a reliably pristine screen
image and enjoy greater access to
global entertainment. This alternative
content (increasingly known as
“event cinema”) includes an everexpanding variety of independent
ﬁlms, arts programmes, sporting
events and educational fare, which
would be impossible to present using
traditional media delivery methods.
In the last year, for example, IDC’s
end-to-end digital cinema solutions
have brought live broadcasts to cities
half a world away from events as
diverse as a rock concert in Estonia
to a grand opera from Moscow’s
Bolshoi Theatre. Attendance, and
consumers’ willingness to pay

premium ticket prices, continues to
grow rapidly.
Replacing the delivery of physical
media or a large hard drive with
delivery via satellitte speeds the
process. The movies are transferred
automatically from the satellite
receive equipment into the theatre
system, so theatre personnel do
not need to touch the movie for a
successful delivery to occur.
Theatres play the downloaded
content from the cinema server in
the form of a highly encrypted digital
ﬁle called a “Digital Cinema Package”
(DCP), typically 200-300GB for a
feature movie. The necessary
decryption keys are delivered
separately from the content, usually
as an email attachment. The keys are
time-limited to the planned exhibition
schedule, as well as locked to the
speciﬁc server and projector. The
most advanced security, such
as that offered by IDC, can even
encrypt the satellite link to protect
the conﬁdentiality of the metadata
distributed over the system.

for satellite companies. When
forming partnerships with providers
of digital cinema distribution
systems, satellite providers will want
to carefully examine critical issues
such as workflow.

and exhibitors, so the end-to-end
