Roland Introduces The VC-1 Series
Video devices with uncompressed signals such as SDI and HDMI have become more common in live
production, and as a result, the need for video conversion is growing...

his is the case especially
when audio and video signals
are combined in a multi-device
integrated system. In these
circumstances, each different video
component could add delay and
therefore latency adjustments are
required to sync audio and video
signals.
The VC-1 Series from Roland
Systems Group (RSG) is a brand
new range of portable video
converters using award-winning
Roland multi-format conversion
technology concentrated in a
simpliﬁed mini-converter to address
the demand for high-quality, lossless
video and audio converters for
live/post production as well as
installed systems. The VC-1 Series
comprises of the VC-1-HS (HDMI
to SDI), VC-1-SH (SDI to HDMI),
VC-1-DL (Bi-directional SDI/HDMI
with audio/video delay and frame
sync) and the VC-1-SC (Up/Down
Cross/Scan converter to SDI/HDMI
with Frame Sync).
The VC-1 series provides
uncompromising picture quality,
faithfully converting the original
source with no change in colour or
brightness, supporting rich-blacks
and super-whites. By maintaining
the video characteristics there are
no interlacing artifacts, pixel shifting
or other conversion or signal errors.
The VC-1 series features an onboard re-clocker to compensate for
attenuation of SDI signals carried
over long distances, making it
possible to receive camera relay
video while maintaining a high image
quality. The products also support
both level A and B 3G-SDI, letting
you connect a variety of 3G-SDI
sources. 1080i, 720p and SD signals
are accommodated automatically
on connection.
The VC-1 series is HDCP
compliant allowing the user to
convert, pass-through or delay
HDCP signals (VC-1-DL only) with
the exception of any SDI output,
allowing the VC-1 Series to be
used in any HDCP based system.
Selectable audio embedding and
de-embedding enables audio
signals from a different source to be
placed into the video output. Digital
AES/EBU input and output signals
are supported to ensure high-quality
audio signals can be maintained
through the signal flow.
The Roland VC-1-SC Video
Converter is ideal for live production
where analogue or digital sources
are required to match a certain SDI
and/or HDMI video format, aspect
ratio, frame rate, or input type.

VC-1 Series
Roland VC-1-DL: In live
production as you add
more video components
to a signal ﬂow latency
is introduced. The
VC-1-DL converter not
only allows bidirectional
conversion of SDI/HDMI but
it also provides frame sync and
delay adjustment of up to nine ﬁelds
(4.5 frames) for audio and video
independently. This is helpful when
keeping various types of cameras in
sync as well as ensuring a projector
stays in sync with an LED wall. In
this way it is an indispensable tool
for live production, broadcast and
recording applications.
Roland VC-1-HS: Increasingly
HDMI video cameras are being used
for live production. The VC-1-HS
converts, extends and embeds audio
from HDMI to SDI. This converter is
especially complementary to the
Roland V-1600HD and V-800HD
multi-format video mixers when you
want to use HDMI camera sources
as SDI inputs on the mixer.
Roland VC-1-SH: The cost of
SDI monitoring sometimes can be
prohibitive for certain applications.
The VC-1-SH converter allows you
to convert an SDI signal to HDMI,
providing a more cost-effective
monitoring solution. This converter
is also complementary to the Roland
V-40HD multi-format video mixer
when you want to use an SDI
camera as an input to the mixer.

B) /HD/SD SDI In/Out, HDMI In/Out,
RGB/Component In and Composite

this compact product. The VC-1-SC
can also be controlled via PC/Mac
using the Control Application (VC-1
RCS). The VC-1-SC shares in the
same rugged build quality with 2mm
aluminium case and connectors
screwed to the chassis, as well as
HDCP compliance. Unlike the other
models in the VC-1 Series, the VC1-SC is not fully lossless due to its
scaling and frame rate conversion
functionality.
The VR-50HD HD Multi-Format
AV Mixer With Built-in USB 3.0:
The Roland VR-50HD fully integrates
an audio mixer, video switcher,
multi-viewer touch screen and
USB Video/Audio Streaming into a
stand-alone device controllable by a
single operator. This unique product
adds HD/multi-format capability
to the popular Roland VR Series
that includes the Roland VR-5 and
VR-3 AV Mixers. Providing a ‘plug
in and play’ solution, the VR-50HD
combines an audio mixer to mix the
audio inputs from various sources
including microphones, a video
mixer to mix video and computer
sources using different connectors
(digital and analogue), preview
monitors to view all the sources, the
ability to record or archive the event
and also to stream the event online.
The video side of the VR-50HD
features a 12-input, four-channel
multi-format video switcher that
also includes a still store channel
for graphics, logo or frame
capture. Inputs can be 3G/HD/
SD SDI, HDMI, RGB/component
and composite. Outputs include
USB and both a Main and Aux
bus, both available via SDI, HDMI
and RGB/Component connections.
An additional HDMI output is

included for an external multi-viewer
monitor if desired.
The audio section is equally
impressive with a 12-channel digital
audio mixer at the heart. Sources
can be mixed from any of the 12
analogue inputs or from audio
embedded in the four SDI or four
HDMI inputs. Audio processing
includes audio-follow settings as
well as gates, compression, PEQ,
delay, reverb and even mastering
capabilities on the main output.
Audio is mixed and re-embedded
into the SDI, HDMI, and analogue
Main and Aux buses as well as
the USB output.
The USB 2.0/3.0 output makes
web streaming easy by simply
connecting to a computer running
a live streaming service such as
USTREAM. Recording is equally
simple by using QuickTime or the
dedicated Window/Mac capture
software, the Video Capture for VR.
The VR-50HD is HDCP compliant
which allows you to mix copyprotected game, tablet, and Blu-ray
content with other computer and
camera sources.
