Nautel’s Intelligent NT Series
Nautel’s Director of Sales, Chuck Kelly,
fields our questions on the new intelligent
NT Series UHF Digital Transmitters…

InB: How is your company adapting
to meet customer demands?
Chuck Kelly: Nautel listens to our
customers, and most of the best
product innovation ideas have
come from our customers. In fact,
the primary reason we have jumped
into the TV transmitter industry is that
several key customers who have both
Radio and TV stations, told us they
wanted the same reliability, innovation
and support in TV transmitters that
they like in our radio products.
We also listened when our
customers told us that they now
are responsible for many more
transmitter sites than ever before,
and hate hauling around heavy test
equipment. We responded with the

Advanced User Interface, or AUI,
basically a load of configurable test
equipment like spectrum analysers
(both RF and baseband), network
analysers, Lissajous audio monitors,
MER display, as well as hundreds
of test-points measuring currents,
voltages, temperatures and fan
speeds all over the transmitter, all
connected to a webserver so that it
can be viewed from anywhere at any
time, on any web connected browser.
Lately we’ve been taking the
same approach to support. Why
not have the transmitter collect and
communicate operation data and
diagnostic information to a Nautel
support cloud so that our customer
service team can quickly analyse
equipment issues and even anticipate
solutions for our customers we call
that PhoneHome.
InB: What criteria are broadcasters
using to select products?

CK: With the swift rise in electrical
costs worldwide, and no sign of it
abating, I guess efficiency is priority
for most broadcasters. Not only is
the cost of running the transmitter
an issue, but the cost of running the
blowers or air conditioning to cool
the room is critical as well. And, as I
mentioned, engineers are taking care
of more and more sites today, so
reliability is paramount. Nobody has
time to change or re-neutralise tubes
anymore. Lastly, it’s key features that
truly save the broadcaster money,
like Push Radio which can eliminate
satellite distribution costs, or Orban
Inside that can save thousands, and
make the processing accessible
remotely via the AUI.
InB: Which territories are showing
particular activity?
CK: Of course, the economies in
North America and Europe are just
now beginning to rebound, and
there are a lot of broadcasters who

have held off replacing transmitters
which are no longer economical to
operate. Other parts of the world
remain strong, many fuelled by the
conversion to digital.
InB: Any product innovations
ahead that you can discuss?
CK: With 40+ design engineers
at Nautel, we always have many
new products and features we are
working on. This IBC, and next NAB
are likely to be very exciting indeed.
InB: Can you describe some of
your recent deployments?
CK: We’re just shipping the largest
ever order in our 44 years, 27 high
power MW DRM transmitters for All
India Radio, which has the potential
to change the landscape for digital
radio everywhere.

Virtual Sets Made Easy

t was in 1994 when one of the
very first shows sent on-air with
Brainstorm real-time 3D graphics
technology was daily live weather
show for Antena 3, in Spain, which
extensively used a 3D virtual set, a
live talent, 3D graphics, live camera
movements and live weather data
feeds. At that time it represented
a complex technological challenge
that required supercomputers
such as the SGI Onyx to achieve
the real-time results. Additionally,
the camera movements had to be
tracked to create a realistic scene
with 3D elements correctly placed
in 3D space, and not only standing
in a fixed shot. As camera tracking
technology was not commercially

available, Brainstorm developed a
device able to read and transfer the
camera position and movements to
the Brainstorm software to correctly
render the 3D elements in real time
along with the camera position. The
show was major success and won
a European Award for the Best
Weather Presentation.
Now, nearly 20 years later, as
3D virtual sets are common in
television, the challenge is not only
to enhance the 3D real-time effects,
but to create more complex and
more realistic projects. And most
importantly, to provide a technology
accessible to broadcasters of any
size that permits the designers to
concentrate on creation and deliver
