The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
Web-based video may be taking over the world but it still needs someone to find a way to
make money from it – enter the subscription channel…

am not easily star tled but
two things surprised me this
month. The fi rst was YouTube’s
announcement that it will launch
a subscription TV platform.
As a man of a certain age, I watch
TV programmes on the big shiny
screen in the corner of my living
room. I don’t really watch YouTube
except in extreme circumstances.
But my tech friendly 14-year-old
son does the opposite. He ONLY
watches YouTube (when he’s not on
Facebook) and he can spend hours
finding new and exciting ways to
amuse himself!
So, although I’m not the target
audience, I know it’s a popular
medium so perhaps I shouldn’t
really find it surprising that YouTube
is to start creating, commissioning
or buying rights to content it can
charge money for. If it’s good stuff,
people will pay for it. And that is
the bit that surprised me.
Home video of cats on
skateboards is free. Creating TV
shows with high production values
is not. In fact it is very expensive.
Whatever shows YouTube
wants to charge for they have to
be exclusive and they have to be
brilliantly made. If they follow the
example of Netflix, a company
that invested US$100 million in a
remake of House of Cards, they’re
potentially on to a winner. That
example shows that viewers are
quite happy to pay for programmes
– even if the content provider is a

new company – as long it is a
good programme.
Which leads me neatly to the
other thing that caught me by
surprise – the US online video
network Machinima is entering the
UK market and will spend big bucks
on original commissions.
Who? I had never heard of
Machinima either. They’re based
in Hollywood apparently and they
distribute advertising-supported
content via the YouTube, Facebook,
games consoles, mobile etc. Their
audience is the gaming generation:
13 to 35 year-old males who like
comedy, sci-fi, action and horror.
Previously they majored on video
game re-streams (where gamers
record themselves at play and post
the action online), but now in order
to grow the business they are also
making spin-off content from those
games – what you and I might call
TV – and they’re going to make local
shows in different territories (hence
the focus on the UK).
Here are some stats that might
surprise you: number of YouTube
views [to March 2013 – Ed.] 2.2
billion (160 million in UK); 950
million mobile views; 200 million
viewers a month. These are
certainly active viewers.
But, like YouTube’s subscription
TV plans, if Machinima is going to
make high quality TV content, it is
going to cost money, and lots of it.

know that you cannot currently

make much money from web
video. Which may explain why
Machinima announced in May
that it had secured a US$35 million
investment from Google (that’ll be
YouTube) to fund investment into
programme making.
They’re now embarking on
another round of funding too. If
that works, they may look at a
subscription model. Again, much
like YouTube is doing. And they
must have something about them
as Ridley Scott’s RSA productions
in LA is working on a series
of short films.
Which all sounds great. But ask
anyone with a YouTube channel and
they’ll tell you that even if you get
a big audience, turning that into a
big advertising or big subscription

business is really very hard.
Despite the huge positives (not
least for UK producers), without
obvious returns available for the
investment required, I can see this
being a long hard slog for both
YouTube and Machinima.
The big question will be: Is it
worth it? I for one am yet to be
convinced that it is, but with the
numbers being quoted, if all true, I
question whether this train is going
to be derailed. Perhaps we should
ask my son.
