he microphone manufacturing
sector has long been one of the
more competitive in the broadcast,
recording and live audio sectors and
there have been some significant
technological developments since
Emile Berliner ‘invented’ the first
microphone in 1876 and in 1942 the
ribbon microphone made its debut
in the world of broadcast. And
while there are many newcomers,
mostly taking advantage of cheap
production costs in the Far East,
major and long-established names
continue to hold sway.
The likes of AKG, Neumann,
Sennheiser, Shure, Schoeps
Beyerdynamic and Audio-Technica
remain to the fore, while Denmark’s
DPA is making serious inroads.
Each broadcast and pro audio
show sees more new models, with
many variations on established
technologies, coming to market.
Designed to improve audio from
DSLR cameras and camcorders,
Shure Incorporated has introduced
the VP83 LensHopper CameraMount Condenser Microphone
and the VP83F with integrated
flash recording.
“In the DSLR space, we’ve seen
a growing demand for compact,
rugged, and portable cameramount condensers that deliver
natural audio reproduction,” says
Chad Wiggins, Category Director
for Wired Microphone Products at
Shure. “The LensHopper models
borrow the acoustic design of

Shure at the Country Music
Television Awards

Shure’s popular VP82 shotgun
microphone, which provides the
exceptional sound quality for which
Shure products are known.”
The ultra-compact condenser
shotgun microphones, with a
sturdy isolation suspension
system developed exclusively
with Rycote, are engineered “to
provide broadcast professionals,
videographers, filmmakers, video
journalists, field reporters, and
others with an all-in-one solution
for capturing highly directional,
premium audio with DSLR cameras
and portable video/audio recorders”.
“We’ve partnered with Rycote
to develop a unique, integrated
implementation of their world
renown Lyre shock mounting
system,” adds Wiggins. “The
suspension offers superior isolation
from vibration and mechanical noise
through its customised design.
Additionally, the VP83F’s integrated
flash recording/playback capacity
marks a first for us and is a feature
we know is of extreme value to the
DSLR user community.”
When Country Music Television’s
(CMT) Awards Show was
broadcast live in June this year,
wireless microphone systems,
and in-ear monitors from Shure
dominated the stage at Nashville’s
Bridgestone Arena.
The primary audio equipment
supplier for the event was Clair
Global, with wireless frequency
coordination by Jeff Briggette.
Performances by Shure endorsers
Little Big Town, Hunter Hayes, Luke
Bryan, and Florida-Georgia Line all
featured SM58capsules atop Shure
UR2 handheld transmitters, while
Randy Houser and Lenny Kravitz
each went with hardwired 58s.
The evening’s house band, The
Mavericks, also featured SM58
vocals. Performances by Cassadee
Pope, last season’s winner of The
Voice competition on NBC, and
Kree Harrison from American Idol,
both sang on wired SM58s for their
performances. Singer/songwriter
Kacey Musgraves, on the other
hand, opted for the KSM9 capsule
on a UR2 transmitter.
Audio producer Tom Davis
shared music mixing duties
with Stan “Quack” Dacus, while
production mixer Mark King
handled the broadcast mix. Fans
inside Bridgestone Arena heard the
house mix provided by Rick Shimer
of Blackhawk Audio, all veterans of
this event. Davis is a big fan of using
Shure wireless in high-pressure
situations like the CMT Awards.

Ceremony with Audio-Technica’s Artist Elite 5000 Series Wireless Systems and

“With 13 music performances,
basically back-to-back on live TV,
there’s no room for error,” says
Davis. “Between microphones, inear systems, and intercom, we were
running well over 150 RF channels,
and the Shure UHF-R wireless
mics and PSM1000 in-ears gave
us flawless RF and great sound.”
For the sixteenth year in a row,
a broad range of Audio-Technica
microphones was selected to outfit
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
induction ceremony. A-T supplied
over 50 mics to capture the music for
the twenty-eighth annual induction
ceremony, which took place at
the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles,
California. Inductees included Rush
(long-time A-T supporters), Heart,
Albert King, Randy Newman, Public
Enemy and Donna Summer. Nonperforming honorees included Lou
Adler and Quincy Jones. The show
was broadcast on HBO.
Eight channels of AudioTechnica’s acclaimed Artist Elite
5000 Series UHF Wireless System
were used with AEW-T3300
handheld microphones/transmitters
for frontline vocals throughout the
evening, notably on the evening’s
finale by Chris Cornell, John Fogerty,
Dave Grohl and Ann Wilson.
The Rush performance had a
particularly strong Audio-Technica
presence, with Rush bassist and
longtime Audio-Technica user
Geddy Lee performing with an A-T
Artist Elite AE6100 Hypercardioid
Dynamic Handheld Microphone,
and the band’s guitarist Alex
Lifeson using his Audio-Technica
5000 Series wireless systems setup

on guitar. The band was mixed by
FOH and monitor engineers Brad
Madix and Brent Carpenter, both
avid A-T supporters.
The backline mic complement
of A-T wired microphones
included AE2500 Dual-element
Instrument Microphone; AE3000
Cardioid Condenser Instrument
Microphone; ATM450 Cardioid
Condenser Instrument Microphone;
AT4050ST Stereo Condenser
Microphone; AT4080 PhantomPowered Bidirectional Ribbon
Microphone; AE5400 Cardioid
Condenser Handheld Microphone;
and AT4054 Handheld Cardioid
Condenser Microphone.
