Stereoscopic 3D Is History – Again!
Stereoscopic 3D television and film has been tried several times in the past with varying degrees of
success, yet it continues to be more than a little problematical…

t is little surprise that 3DTV has not
been welcomed by consumers in
their living rooms.
Now, new research from the
US-based Consumer Electronics
Association (CEA), the lobby group
that tracks industry sales, has
confirmed it.
At a gathering of the CE industry
in June, Steve Koenig, CEA Director
of Industry analysis, said that 3D
set sales “have been somewhat
one-dimensional.”
In fact, the amount of 3D units
shipped from January through
March of this year increased just
1%, falling far short of previous
“industry expert” predictions of a
lofty 28% increase.
With this dire scenario as a
backdrop, the production industry
and broadcasters themselves are
giving up on what was once looked
at as a catalyst for improved TV set
sales (and viewers). However, the
hurdles of having to buy a new
TV set and wear geeky glasses
to watch a limited amount of
programming appear to have
been too much for the likings of
the general TV-buying population.
Even moviegoers have cooled to
the technology and its higher ticket
price. A well-documented series
of bad 3D conversions have not
helped the cause.
“The question of 3D is a very
straightforward one,” said

Christopher Nolan, Director of
‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ which was
released in 3D and grossed over
US$250 million in the US alone at
the box office.
“I never meet anybody who
actually likes the format, and it’s
always a source of great concern to
me when you’re charging a higher
price for something that nobody
seems to really say they have any
great love for.”
As for broadcasting 3D content,
there has been endless debate
about the practicalities of doing
it and only a few that took a risk.
ESPN in the US was one of them
and spent a lot of time, money and
effort to get it right.
In 2010, when the latest iteration
(and hype) of digital 3DTV began,
FIFA’s World Cup soccer tournament
– the world’s most watched live
sporting event – was the first
global event to be broadcast in the
stereoscopic video format. In the
US, with the financial support of
Sony and others, ESPN carried it
on a separate channel it eventually
called ‘ESPN 3D.’
There were a lot of early “growing
pains”, not least figuring out where
exactly to place the in-stadium
and on-field cameras in order to
give viewers the most immersive
effect. It didn’t always work exactly
as planned, as synchronising two
HD camera feeds and seamlessly

3D offered the promise of an immersive viewing experience

Manufacturers pushed the 3D format at screenings
and provided production backing

stitching them together turns out to
be a lot harder than it might seem.
ESPN 3D launched in 2010 with
coverage of 25 FIFA World Cup
matches, but in June of this year
decided – or more precisely its
parent company Disney, decided
– to stop the financial bleeding and
shut down the channel by the end
of this year.
“We gave it a shot to see where it
landed. It’s simple: there wasn’t a
demand curve for it,” Chuck Pagano,
the Executive Vice President
and Chief Technology Officer of
ESPN, said. “If 3DTV makes a
comeback, we’ll at least be ready
to entertain it again.”
Now, this wave of negativity has
the international football association
FIFA reviewing whether it will use
the technology at all to cover the
2014 World Cup. FIFA has sent
questionnaires to broadcast rights
holders to assess their interest in
3D coverage. Demand won’t be
as high as in 2011, that’s for sure,
but there will be some. Overseas
broadcasters in Europe continue
to (at least publically) favour 3D
content in some form or another.
There apparently is interest from
several broadcasters in local 3D
presentations (meaning on-site
viewing areas or in movie theatres,
not at-home viewing), but the cost
to do so, and whether it is worth it,
is currently under review.
“We are still reviewing whether
we should do 3D for the 2014 FIFA
World Cup, said Niclas Ericson,
FIFA’s Director of Television. “We
know that the technology has had
a few setbacks in recent days, if you
refer to some of the statements [by

ESPN]. It’s clear when a big sports
broadcaster like ESPN makes an
announcement like that, it creates
a lot of extra tension [for the
technology].”
Only about 6% of television sets in
the US can display 3D programming.
Consumer demand for 3DTV has
lagged largely due to the costs
associated with the technology, and
the inconvenience of using active
shutter and/or passive glasses.
“Whether this [limited appeal for
3D] is temporary and this will come
back in a few years in a new way
we don’t know,” Ericson said. “We
are spending most of our efforts
[on HD coverage] and that’s most
important for us.”
Panasonic and Sony, in an effort
to sell equipment, were both major
supporters of early 3D productions
but have reduced their financial
sponsorships in live events
around the world.
Production companies that have
promoted the technology heavily,
such as the Cameron-Pace Group,
are rethinking their strategies for
how to get 3DTV off the ground.
Many speculate that until autostereoscopic technologies, that is
3DTV without the need for glasses,
the technology will not find a true
place in consumers’ homes.
To this end, Cameron-Pace Group
(CPG) has formed an alliance with
Dolby Laboratories and Royal
Philips Electronics to support 3D
content in general and glassesfree 3D TV in particular. Under
the agreement, CPG will integrate
Dolby 3D, Dolby’s suite of auto
