Enriching Live Content – Second Screens

n recent years, broadcasters and
content providers have been hit
by dual marketplace realities that
have brought both challenges and
opportunities.
Firstly, there’s the need to produce
more and better quality content that
engages today’s active viewers
without necessarily increasing
operational costs.
Enriched content is critical
to drive content to the range of
mobile devices – from smartphones
to tablets – now ubiquitous as
consumers use them not only to
facilitate on-the-go lifestyles, but
also to engage with traditional media
and friends in new ways.
Social media has come of age
and it’s affecting the way viewers
consume media of all types. A shift
from traditional to personalised
media consumption is well underway.
N o t s u r p r i s i n g l y, m a n y
broadcasters and rights owners
see the proliferation of social media
and second-screen engagement as
business-threatening competition.
Why? Well they think people will
spend more time connecting with

others on connected devices
meaning time away from their TVs.
This is not necessarily so. Many of
today’s consumers now browse
the Internet and interact with social
media while watching TV, so it’s
no longer an either-or proposition.
Viewing has evolved from a passive
to an active pursuit.
The silver lining now is that
broadcasters can engage these
multitaskers by letting them
exchange their views via social
media networks directly on the
second screen.

can provide more ways for viewers
to engage with the content they’re
viewing including the interacting
through votes or evaluations or
receiving content customised to
their preferences. In addition to
premium content and increased
viewer engagement, new revenue
opportunities are created – from app
sales to facilitating the purchase of
goods and merchandise.
Implementing technology to
enable broadcasters and content
owners to make the most of
multiscreen is surprisingly easy.
Designed as a suite of tools that
can be added onto live multi-camera
production infrastructure, the
technology enables broadcasters
and rights owners to instantly output
content to multiple screens.
The technology is integrated into
a seamless file-based workflow
either at a broadcast centre or onsite
production venue, providing all of
the tools necessary to generate
exclusive content on a personalised
application interface. With this
capability, broadcasters can add
new revenue streams and value to
existing services.
Sports production provides a good
example of how this technology is
being best used. In live sports, only

10% of recorded content is put on
the air in the regular programme,
leaving 90% unused. With the right
tools, this original unused content
can be monetised.
The technology available allows
active viewers to see exclusive
content and to choose from several
camera angles on their second
screens through a timeline where
third-party statistics are inserted,
all in near-real-time. This experience
with the integration of social media
on a single web interface enables
a high degree of interactivity
and facilitates cause-and-effect
programming.
Future success will depend
on using existing infrastructure,
multiple cameras and other
technology to smartly gather,
produce and monetise content. To
thrive moving forward broadcasters
and rights owners must manage live
content so that it can be output and
viewed on multiple platforms, giving
consumers more and better choices.
Rather than fight against
the evolution of media and
its consumption, let’s enable
consumers to have choice and
receive personally relevant content.
It’s time to implement a collaborative
and integrated live production
environment of real-time content
ingest and editing for extending and
enriching live content.

IABM Supports Educational Foundation

he IABM has announced that, in
accordance with the objectives
of its Lifelong Learning Manifesto,
the association has supported the
establishment of an Educational
Foundation.
The foundation is registered as
a charity in the UK and operates
globally, independent of the
IABM. Its mission is to deliver a
broadcast and media technology

skills certiﬁcation scheme along
with other initiatives that support
technical education, skills, and
career development in the sector.
Over the past two years, the IABM
Training Academy has overseen the
delivery of broadcast and media
technology courses to hundreds
of delegates from around the
world. Until now, there has been
no effective recognition of the
resulting attainment.
“We are developing our certiﬁcation
scheme to help broadcast
professionals secure international
accreditation to ISO: IEC 17024,
which is the conformity standard
for bodies certifying individuals,”
said Roger Crumpton a Founding
Director and Trustee of the IABM
Educational Foundation. “We have
secured initial funding for three years
and have already been able to make
funds available for training bursaries
and for ﬁnancial awards to students.”
Once pilot assessments are

completed, the foundation will
provide a suite of examinations,
delivered online and open to all, that
will lead to the award of a Certiﬁed
Broadcast and Media Technologist
qualification.
This qualification will enable
engineers and technologists to
prove their personal achievement
and it will be complemented by a
scheme for recognising continuing
occupational and professional
development. This will put the onus
on the individual to maintain the
certiﬁcation throughout their careers.

Manifesto, which commits us to
fostering not only the development
of educational resources, such as
courses offered by the IABM Training
Academy, but also the means of
testing and recognising delegates’
educational achievement.
