nsemble Designs’ BrightEye NXT
Compact Router is about the
size of a CD box set and is the tool
that mobile, sports and production
crews will soon prefer.
Its front panel LCD displays full
motion video of the router’s SDI
sources, while the clean-switched
output lets the operator take an
output directly to air. The operator
has the advantage of visually
verifying sources before performing
any switching operations. The LCD
also shows format details, timing
information and audio meters.
Source and destination names are
displayed on the LCD for ease of
operation. The EIC for an OB van

window and see if a source is
present on the router’s LCD display.
The BrightEye Router has two
built-in clean switches, each of
which can be assigned to any output,
whether BNC or SFP. The switches
provides full frame synchronisation
which means it switches cleanly
between asynchronous sources,

making it a good fit for ENG
and OB applications. Wild feeds
from cameras, helicopters, and
microwaves are switched cleanly
and quietly. Embedded audio
is switched quietly, without any
pops or clicks.
The router’s BNCs are assigned
as inputs or outputs by the user.
This ﬂexible architecture allows the
user to decide how many router
inputs and outputs are needed.
The router can be conﬁgured as
2x13 or 13x2 or any combination
in between. One facility might need
an11x4 conﬁguration while another
might need a 5x10.
There are two ﬁxed input BNCs,
two ﬁxed output BNCs and seven
assignable BNCs that are userconfigurable either as inputs or
outputs. The two SFP (small format
pluggable) cages can be populated
with dual SFPs that have ﬁbre optic
or other connectors, allowing the
user to determine the best connector
for the facility.

For fibre installations where
a clean switch is desired, the
BrightEye NXT offers up to two
clean-switched optical outputs.

and take buttons are colour coded,
making ﬁeld operation easy. For
example, when used in a helicopter
installation, the operator can easily
see all sources have red buttons,
even when in turbulent air space.

aid with testing and integration.
Router inputs don’t need to be taken
up by a reference generator since
test signals are already built into the
BrightEye NXT.
The router’s built-in web server is
accessed via the Ethernet port. An
iPad or computer running a web
browser can be used to conﬁgure
and switch the router. Video
thumbnails show router sources.
