that you can always make
a hard light soft, but you can’t
make a soft light hard. Give them
a beautiful strong light and they can
light anything. It is part of why they
love their plasma source so much.
Hive’s plasma technology

ﬁxtures that pack real punch. The
company’s plasma lights 5600K
single point source ﬁxtures which
consume 50%-90% less energy
than conventional studio ﬁxtures,
are completely flicker free, last
10,000 hours, and produce even full
spectrum daylight with a 94CRI. Not
only does it make great hard beams
easy to cut and control, but it can
easily be softened and shaped for
beautiful soft effects. Sources like
Wasp Plasma Par and Killer Plasma
Maxis are perfect for creating large
bounces, “book lights” and ﬁlling
diffusion frames to create soft light
with some real power.
Hive has discovered that
their Wasp Pars make excellent
continuous light sources for
photography for just this reason.
Using silver and white umbrellas
as well as a wide variety of soft
boxes from multiple manufactures,

For many of the same reasons the
Wasp also makes a great source
for interviews, especially when on
location. Being able to run the Wasp
off batteries and pairing it with a
soft box allows for a highly mobile
source, flattering for on screen
talent and interview subjects, but
strong enough to ﬁght daylight.
Starting with the hard plasma par
source, means the cameraperson
can adjust the diffusion levels to
match both the subject he/she is
shooting and the output needs of
the location.
Recently Hive had the opportunity
to blend the advantages of their
hard and soft source opportunities
in a video produced to show behind
the scenes of the lighting done
for a commercial shoot featuring
the Chevy Volt. The video shows
examples of soft beauty light on

Hive Lighting also had the
opportunity to work at the SXSW
ﬁlm festival where they provided
red carpet lighting for all the movie
premieres. Being an all day festival
they needed a strong source with
very little power consumption that
could ﬁght the sun but make the
moviestars look great.
The Wasp Plasma Par was the
perfect instrument, saving the
festival, time and money without
sacriﬁcing any of the quality they
had come to expect for a prestigious
ﬁlm festival.
