igawave took ‘INCAM’, its new
integrated wireless camera
system and the new ‘Clip-On
4’ wireless camera transmitter,
both first shown at IBC 2012, to
the MotoGP Championship to
be put through their paces by
Dorna Spor ts, the exclusive
commercial and television rights
holder for the FIM Road Racing
World Championship Grand Prix
– MotoGP.
Designed in co-operation with
Sony, INCAM marks a departure
from the traditional method of
attaching wireless transmitters to a
camera’s rear battery plate by fitting
snugly within the body of Sony’s
new HDC-2500 camera, which
provides significant advantages
in terms of weight distribution and
streamlined configuration functions.
Lance Hiley, Chief Marketing
Officer for Vislink International Ltd
said: “The feedback we received
from the professional cameramen
at Valencia indicates that the sleek
profile of the integrated design and
the superior overall balance enabled
them to transition from shoulder
to hand-held positions with ease,
allowing them to focus on capturing
the excitement and emotion of the
event. The ability to configure the
transmitter through the camera’s
existing viewfinder menu was also
a substantial, time-saving benefit.

The Clip-On 4 is designed for use
with both HD and SD cameras for
ENG, OB and studio applications.
The Clip-On 4 benefits from ultra-low
latency of just half a frame (20ms)

with H.264 encoding. Dorna used
the Clip-On 4-equipped camera
throughout the championship
weekend with no intervention
required by Gigawave’s on-site
support team. Dorna in particular
cited the unit’s H.264 performance
as a highlight. Not only was the
image quality deemed to be
superior, but more efficient video
encoding meant that less microwave
spectrum was required and lower
modulation schemes could be

used, which is important when
cameramen need more robust RF
performance to access remote or
obstructed areas to capture images
that would otherwise be impossible.
Gigawave is the official radio
frequency supplier to MotoGP. Its
wireless systems and a range of
ancillary technologies are used
extensively by Dorna Sports to
broadcast images from MotoGP
race circuits. For example, each
MotoGP bike is equipped with three
Gigawave on-board HD cameras;
pit lane cameras are fitted with
Gigawave’s HD D-Cam Clip-On’s;
and helicopters are equipped
with Gigawave wireless video
links for aerial shots of the action.
All systems transmit to Dorna’s
production studio via a Gigawave
MDR receive system.
Hiley concluded: “The Gigawave
products that we successfully tested
at the MotoGP Championship
are just a taster of what’s to
come in 2013.”

he PAGlink battery system was
conceived with multi-camera
compatibility in mind. Rather
than using different batteries and
chargers for each camera type,
PAG anticipated that it would be
more efficient to use the V-Mount

PAG’s solution allows the V-Mount
Plate to be conﬁgured to sit
horizontally or vertically

(V-Lok/V-Lock) Li-Ion batteries,
designed for shoulder-mounted
broadcast cameras, for every
camera power application.
When combined, two PAGlink
batteries have a capacity of 192
watt-hours and a current draw
capability of 12A, which is superior
to the 10A provided by so-called
high-current cell technologies. If
required, PAGlink allows a third
or fourth battery to be added,
providing endless power for any
camera set-up.
The key was to create a system of
compact, lightweight batteries that
could be used individually for small,
low power-consumption cameras
(DSLRs, Blackmagic’s Cinema
Camera, Canon’s C300/500) which
could then be linked, combining
capacities for set-ups that have
a higher power consumption or

that draw a greater current (ARRI
Alexa, Red One/Epic/Scarlet, Sony
F55/F65 etc).
The packs incorporate the highcurrent contacts required for such
demanding applications. PAG’s
approach gives you high-capacity
Li-Ion batteries that employ
less expensive standard Li-Ion
cell-technology. Combining the
capacities of individual 96Wh LiIon batteries ensures that all your
batteries are legally transportable
by passenger aircraft.
PAG has introduced new V-Mount
Plates for cameras where it is not
possible to mount the batteries
directly (Blackmagic Cinema
Camera, Canon EOS 5D & 7D,
Canon C300/500, Nikon D800, Red
Epic and Scarlet).
The solution is to use the camera
accessory/mattebox rods (rails/

bars) to mount the battery to the
set-up. PAG has ensured that its
V-Mount Plate can be configured to
sit horizontally or vertically, above
or below the rods, so that it does
not obstruct the camera display or
other accessories.
It offers V-Mount Plate assemblies
that feature a clamp for either 15mm
or 19mm rods. A 12V D-Tap output
is incorporated, allowing the power
connection to be made using a PAG
D-Tap Power Lead specific to the
camera. D-Tap Power Leads that
feature an in-line voltage downconverter are available for 7.2V to
8.2V cameras.
The V-Mount incorporates the
contacts required for the PAGlink
battery to communicate with the
camera data system, used for
displaying capacity in the camera
viewfinder.
