Eutelsat Demo Channel Heralds Europe’s
First Dedicated Ultra HD (4K) Service

on the EUTELSAT 10A satellite...

filmed in 4K started on January
8. Delivering a resolution of eight
million pixels, four times the
resolution of HDTV, Ultra HD (4K)
is poised to mark the next big leap
forward in the immersive viewing
experience.
Eutelsat’s new channel is
designed to benefit all participants
in the broadcasting chain who want
to acquire expertise in 4K, including
production companies, pay-TV
operators, rights owners and TV

set manufacturers.
The new channel will operate in
progressive mode at 50 frames
per second. It will be encoded in
MPEG-4 and transmitted at 40
Mbit/s in four Quad HD streams.
Eutelsat is partnering with ATEME, a
video compression solution provider
to the broadcast industry, for the
transmissions that will be uplinked
to the EUTELSAT 10A satellite from
its teleport in Rambouillet, near Paris.
“This new step towards 4K
continues Eutelsat’s longstanding
commitment to achieving new
broadcast milestones that over the
last 20 years have included digital TV,
HDTV and 3D,” said Jean-François

Leprince-Ringuet, Eutelsat’s
Commercial Director. “Early and
close collaboration between all
players in the broadcast chain will
be a key success factor for this
new revolution. We are delighted
to propose this first Ultra HD
platform for Europe.”
The launch of Europe’s first
dedicated channel came as key
players met in Las Vegas for the
annual Consumer Electronics
Show, one of the world’s leading
technology fairs.
Ultra HD sets were showcased by
display technology leaders revealing
stellar resolution and immersive
viewing experience.

Media’s state-of-the-art broadcast
and production centre in West
London.
Input Media which produces
programming for the likes of
UEFA, The FA, The French Tennis
Federation and the BBC, has used
Marquis’ Project Parking to migrate
long-term content onto its new
Unity ISIS system.
Project Parking offers a fast and
cost-effective archive and restore
process by creating a complete
copy of any Avid project onto
any storage device. By providing

a simple vehicle for archiving all
media associated with a project,
Project Parking enables Avid
users to archive complete projects
safely, quickly and easily between
systems within the same facility or
between sites.
Nick Symes, Director of
Technology, Input Media said:
“Project Parking enabled a straight
forward migration of media from one
physical system to another. One of
the benefits of the solution is that it
saves time by eliminating the need
to search for media across different
workspaces. Project Parking helped
us to make an inventory of Avid

projects and their assets, spanning
across multiple workspaces on our
existing ISIS system before the
migration and identified which
content needed to be moved across
to the new system.
“Project Parking achieves this by
taking an Avid project and collating
a complete list of all the media that
that project has used, whether in
a timeline, or simply in a bin and
then searches all the attached
workspaces for that media,” said
Symes. “At the end of this analysis,
Project Parking can tell you whether
all the media is online, or if not, the
name of the workspace where it was

last located. Project Parking then
goes on to copy all the project files
and all the media that it references to
a new location, checking all the files
(with MD5 checksums) to ensure
they are faithful copies. We are
now considering how we can use
Project Parking to assist with our ongoing digital content management
requirements for the forthcoming
football season.”
However, as well as saving time,
one major advantage of an effective
archive and restore solution is the
potential cost savings compared
with purchasing extended storage
or further editing workstations.
Project Parking on the other hand,
is simple to use by systems admin
staff saving on high-end personnel
salary. Furthermore, other than
the initial outlay for the software
– which is low compared with the
alternative hardware – there are
limited associated costs.
The solution can be run off
a standard workstation using
just around an hour of systems
admin time to archive one large
project. It has been estimated that
Project Parking can save a facility
32% on costs over three years
compared with purchasing a new
edit workstation or 62% over the
same period compared with buying
extended storage.
