organisation’s premises in Canary
Wharf, the studio allows the

The new facility is linked to a master
control room and central apparatus
room, both of which were designed,
built and put into commission by
ATG Broadcast in 2007. The entire
system is configured to operate at
full broadcast quality. Installation
was co-ordinated by ATG Broadcast
Product Specialist Jonathan Baker
and Project Engineer Kelvin Neath.
With offices in more than 40
countries, the client uses television
as a central element of its
management and person-to-person
communication strategy.
The system ATG Broadcast
installed in 2007 has allowed the
organisation’s global staff to operate
as a cohesive team without wasting
time and money on repeated
long-distance travel. The ability
to contribute directly into financial

news broadcasts delivers huge
additional advantages in terms of
wider corporate visibility. The new
ingest studio, like the existing master
control room and central apparatus
room, are backed by an ATG
Broadcast maintenance contract.

Looking forward
As it comes to celebrate its
20th anniversary this year, ATG
Broadcast is seeing an accelerating
introduction of new HD channels
and other media outlets from

established broadcasters and
elsewhere. This expansion will be
followed, inevitably, by advances to
4K, 8K and beyond – as technology
will demand – for delivery by DTT,
satellite, broadband and as yet
undreamt of ways to household
HD devices and to people on the
move in an ever increasing number
of countries throughout the world.
The demand is proving insatiable
and the technology unstoppable.
The future requires system
integrators who understand this.

on their websites. The programming
helps to further their reach into
multiple markets and different
types of programming. Sports and
news departments, in particular,
need a fast and easy way to record
encrypted cable feeds in full HD for
multi-platform broadcasting. For
example, call letter stations often
repurpose content from a major
cable network for their news or
sports programming.
Repurposing content involves
creating different versions of a
piece of content to distribute and
monetise over different distribution
technologies and to different target
audiences. Video content may
be produced in high quality, but
encoded into different formats –
such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4 H.264,
VC1, Apple ProRes – different

standards and frame rates (eg
DVD, PAL, NTSC), and for different
delivery methods including DVD,
broadcast TV, cable TV, satellite,
IPTV or streaming.

operators increasingly need multiformat, multi-screen encoding and
decoding solutions that can handle
the transcoding and simulcasting
needed for a streamlined workflow
and an efficient operation. Major
service providers such as ad
agencies, content distribution
companies and post-production
houses need well-integrated
equipment that can help them
quickly create many versions of a
piece of content to meet the unique
requirements to effectively target
different segments. The video has to
be formatted for different audiences
at different times and delivered to
various viewing devices like TVs,
iPads, computers and smart phones.
To accomplish this today, most

broadcasters use multiple set-top
boxes to record all of the desired
incoming cable feeds. The cable
feeds are recorded in SD and upconverted to HD prior to repurposing
or rebroadcasting. These set-top
boxes take up valuable rack space.
Additionally, the two-step process
of recording and then up-converting
wastes valuable time.
A new system that uses advanced
cable card technology, our MediaPro
IQ records encrypted cable
feeds in full HD for rebroadcast
and repurposing. This content
repurposing system enables
news and sports departments to
repurpose HD content from cable
and broadcast channels quickly
using fewer systems. It eliminates

the need to maintain multiple set
top boxes that take up valuable
rack space and removes the cost
of buying multiple DVRs.
It records from ASI, ASI/IP, SD/
HD-SDI, ATSC, QAM, NTSC, PAL
or DVB-T/C/S2 and can record
anywhere from one to hundreds
of channels.
With a MediaPro IQ system,
users can easily edit, clip and
publish live or recorded content in
real-time. Searches are performed
based on keywords, programme
titles, descriptions, textual metadata,
closed-caption, as-run logs, traffic
logs, alarm and discrepancy logs
and time/date or channel filters.
MediaPro IQ is compatible with
several web browsers, including:
FireFox, Safari, Internet Explorer,
and Chrome. iPad, iPhone, and
Android interfaces are also available.
Video can be exported to Flash,
MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and
XDCAM and other formats for
content repurposing.
