Users’ ID Is Key To ‘TV Everywhere’
The content delivery system must fully address the consumers’ expectations of a solid OTT media
ecosystem and ensure that payments are planted safely in the bank…

hen building a media business
in today’s multiplatform,
multi-standard, file-based media
consumption, it’s not the technical
stuff that’s most important to get
right. The real key to a successful
video delivery ecosystem (often
called “TV Everywhere”) is user
authentication. That is, making
sure a viewer is a paid subscriber
of a pay-TV service before allowing
access.
Implemented correctly, it yields
highly valuable customer data that
can be monetised every time a user
clicks on a clip. Without it, the worth
of content is devalued, easily pirated
and the online experience for the end
user often ends up being bad. Indeed,
the user experience associated
with each transaction also has to
be seamless and reliable in order to
keep people coming back. And then,
the video quality has to be pristine.
Companies like Adobe Systems
are trying to make it easy. The
company has invested a lot of
resources in developing Project
Primetime a software-centric
platform that addresses the various
issues involved with processing
and delivering video in a timely and
highly secure way.
Following months of real-world
tests (e.g. last summer’s Olympics)
Adobe has made the full Primetime
platform available in beta form –
via an SDK for Windows, Mac OS,
Android and iOS devices that will also
include web-connected platforms
such as game consoles, OTT devices
and connected TVs. The full software
release is scheduled for the spring.
The platform tightly integrates
Adobe’s video publishing (Pass,
Access and StreamKit), advertising
(MediaWeaver and Auditude)
and data (AudienceManager and
SiteCatalyst) solutions.

Knowing Your User
Why put so much emphasis on user
transactions? ComScore, a market
research firm, predicts $28.7 billion
in total global online TV and video
revenue by 2017, with 480 million
households across 40 countries
expected to be watching online
TV and video by then. In addition,
3.4 billion minutes of online video
was viewed online across more

than 50% of the U.S. population in
September 2012 alone.
The industry expects a 413%
increase in ad growth for online
media through 2017. And the
numbers can be backed up with
real-world usage data. Adobe said
Primetime was used to authenticate
88 million streams of the 2012
Summer Olympics delivered by NBC
Sports in the U.S. This, Adobe said,
is a record in TV Everywhere history.
The idea, company representatives
have said, is to allow TV content
owners and distributors to “generate
the most revenue from their content
with the broadest audience reach,
seamless HD video playback, and
fully optimised content and ad delivery
across any Web-connected device.”
Wowza Media Systems, in
Evergreen, Colo., offers similar
content protection and access
capability via its “Any Screen Done
Right” media server software that
gives content developers the flexibility
and capabilities they need to stream
media reliably the way they want.
Not only is it employing the latest
H.265 codecs to conserve space
and stream video more efficiently, it is
also leveraging the benefits of H.263
video compression, which it has now
included in the Wowza Transcoder
AddOn to support encoding for
live and on-demand video streams
to older mobile devices. This is
important due to the large number
of existing phones in the marketplace
that need to be addressed.

Delivering On-Demand
Ashley Still, Director of Product
Management, for Adobe Systems,
said the company’s ef for ts
have been focused delivering a
viewing experience that mirrors
broadcast TV while also supporting
audience targeting and analytics
to help content owners monetise
their assets in ways they never
could before.
Still said broadcasters don’t have
to deploy the entire Primetime
platform in order to get the benefits of
one or two of the platform’s modules
to fit their infrastructure needs.
“Broadcasters can absolutely add
to their existing infrastructure and
get the value of just the tools they
need at the time, then add on later
as necessary,” she said.
Adobe MediaWeaver, a new ad
insertion service, places ads into
live, linear, and VoD content using
patent-pending technology that
provides control, flexibility and user
experiences. The system facilitates
dynamic ad executions for video

Adobe’s Primetime platform is available for Windows, Mac OS, Android and iOS devices

content in browsers and apps on
any Web-connected device, with
the idea that broadcasters can offer
customers an engaging, buffer-free
ad and content experience.
The goal, Still said, is to provide
dynamically inserted ad experiences
that mirror broadcast TV while
also offering content owners and
distributors the ability to target and
capture audience metrics, which can
then be leveraged when selling ads.

Primetime Media Player
The new Primetime Media Player
is at the core of Primetime and
allows TV content owners and
distributors to rely on a single
workflow for content preparation,
rights management and streaming
to eliminate platform fragmentation
challenges and maximise reach. In
addition, the player reduces costs by
tightly integrating with all Primetime
components, which ensures that
content, ads and analytics are
optimised and inserted within the
player to maximise the value of
the content and provide a more
meaningful audience experience.
Adobe said the Primetime Media
Player is available as a beta today
via an SDK for Windows, Mac
OS, Android and iOS devices and
will also be extended to include
web-connected platforms such
as game consoles, OTT devices
and connected TVs. Primetime
Media Player for desktop browsers
leverages Adobe’s Flash Player, and
adds capabilities such as closed
captioning, seamless ad insertion,
and advanced analytics. The
Primetime Media Player for mobile
works within apps today, and will
support native browser environments
in the future. Consumers do not have
to download a separate player for
non-desktop devices.

Mobile App Control
Centrify Corporation, based in
Sunnyvale, Calif., offers security
and compliance software that helps
centrally control, secure and audit
access to on-premise and cloudbased systems, mobile devices
and all types of video delivery
applications. The company’s cloudbased mobile security technology
offers Mobile Authentication
Services (MAS) that it says deliver
“Zero Sign-On” Active Directorybased authentication for mobile
applications to cloud services.
The company said that the rise in
mobile device adoption has created
challenges that go beyond setting
security policies via mobile device
management. Until now there has
been no way to fully leverage a
ubiquitous infrastructure for native
mobile applications. Mobile apps
required separate authentication
and authorisation processes that
were set up in a siloed back-end
service, leading to poor security
polices as well as user frustration
and loss of productivity from having
to remember multiple complex
passwords in order to meet security
requirements.
“We want to make sure all of this
content is monetisable, that there’s
a real revenue model behind putting
content online” said Adobe’s Still.
“Because the existing TV industry
has a known and very successful
business model. Content owners
and distributors clearly want to make
money from this endeavour, so we’re
enabling access to a wide variety
of content in a highly secure way.
That’s the only way they will feel
comfortable enough to allow their
assets to be seamlessly consumed
across all of the display screens we
see in the market today.”
