Time To Reverse The Channel Trend
There are viable options for television stations that want to set up channels in the cloud with all the usual station features on tap from an integrated service provider… By Laurent Seve Marketing Manager, BCE www.bce.lu

S

ince the beginning of the century new solutions have arisen on the market making the media player’s life easier with Internet TVs and radios but with the drawback of ridiculous interface and technology boundaries. On the other hand, the classical infrastructures need months of installation, preparation and training. It is time to reverse the trend.

Internet El Dorado
In modern television, the web is being used in many ways to decrease costs to the maximum while avoiding professional work and high quality experience for our end users. “Used as a tool for transportation, distribution and decentralised operations, the Internet can be a great ally in television workflows,” says Sascha Quillet, Supervisor Development New Technology at BCE. The delivery of fully working television stations which provide all the needs of today’s technology including archiving, media asset management, traffic control and playout with the World Wide Web as the operational layer is not a myth anymore. The example of Integrated Television Services, presented by BCE (Broadcasting Center Europe) during the IBC 2012 shows an interesting approach, one which combines, in a clever way, the best of both worlds. The current economic climate is not an easy one for many TV stations which, having less revenue from advertising, still need to face the operational costs of their channels.

with any service provider around the world with its high-speed smart transfer solution. This is the key to modern content management, postproduction can be done in India or in the USA without feeling as if you are working on different sites. The mediaCMS organises all the work orders and automatically applies the changes to the content – such as censorship, transcoding, dubbing, subtitling – and it also organises the archives and manages the metadata of the files. Henri Montin, New Technology Developer at BCE, says: “The configurations are limitless. The entire workflow of the channel can be reconsidered, for instance for one of our Indian customers, the archives with the content are based in Luxembourg and the postproduction is done in Mumbai. Our customer infrastructure fits in a rack with four servers and three workstations.” The mediaCMS has four main functions: • the low resolution based work orders which automatically send a decreased quality video to the companies doing the censorship, subtitles and dubbing; • the classical post-production work which needs to be done on the full quality video and thus exchanged with Movie2Me; • the transcoding triggering working with a server-based farm and; • the management of archives and metadata with the local or decentralised storage unit.

Traffic Road Map
In a normal workfl ow there are traffi c solutions that gather the content together and create a complete road map so that the playout can work smoothly. Do television stations need to accept solutions with fewer options? Or do they need to make a longterm investment, knowing that the technology will be obsolete within the next five years? With a piece of software based on the cloud, there is no more setup and the technology is regularly updated. The television station connects via a secured interface and

Content Runs The Show
As content is now at the centre of any business success story, it must be centralised, carefully archived and well managed. BCE’s solution can be easily installed and setup and can connect

manages all the programmes online. “From programme and rights to long-term and event planning management, our cloud traffic solutions cover all the needs of today’s broadcasters. Once the customer decides to use our solution the basic setup, including the database, the genre and the secondary events configuration is done in less than two hours,” comments Alex Seca, Broadcast IT Manager at BCE. The solution from BCE covers all television station needs through three steps: the programme library and right’s management, the longterm planning and the running order, and the playlist and author rights’ management. Regarding security, the European company put in place a simple and efficient system so that the customer can only connect and work on the cloud solutions with an RSA key. The developer focuses on its 100% Quality of Services and ensures stability through round the clock monitoring and completely redundant infrastructures.

handle multi-format videos, manage secondary events, subtitles and multi-languages. BCE takes the lead with the most advanced playout solution on the market that actually fits in a server. Completely decentralised, the playout server is highly automated and, following the running order, it downloads the required content from anywhere in the world. One server can handle two HD channels and the servers can of course be cascaded if more channels are needed. The graphical user interface is intuitive and does not require any specific technical training. On the top of the line, the server can be sent anywhere and once it is connected to the Internet, configured remotely.

More TV Screens
Used as a tool, the Internet can achieve great results for television i n f r a s t r u c t u r e . To m o r r ow ’s televisions are, on the one hand centralised infrastructure and, on the other, decentralised infrastructures with bits of the workflow divided throughout the world. Mainly for thematic channels it is also a great way to launch a new TV station or even use it as a redundant infrastructure as a backup solution. With all the low quality solutions and unstable products available on the market it was about time that a company reversed the trend and offered top quality services for the same level of investment.

Child’s Playout
Once the content is ready to broadcast and the programme grid and running order is done it is time to gather all of this together and make it go live with a fully automated playout infrastructure. So, looking back at our workflow we see that we want a top of the range playout solution that can
