Taking Control Of Multiscreen Video
According to a recent study conducted by Digital TV Research, it is anticipated that the number of global IPTV subscribers will triple by the year 2017… By Arman Aygen, Business Development, EMEA Mariner
xVu service assurance solution

M

anaging this massive growth in IPTV, combined with the complexities of delivering a high Quality of Experience (QoE) to an ever-increasing number of IPconnected consumer devices, including smartphones, tablets, and PCs, creates a significant strain on TV content delivery networks (CDNs) and operational expenses. As if managing traditional digital TV services was not already complicated enough, deploying a high-quality multiscreen video service requires content providers to oversee complex delivery constraints including multiple viewing platforms, network types, content formats, bitrates, and managing delivery on networks outside of their control. In addition, operators must

analyse a larger volume and variety of data in order to appropriately diagnose and resolve Quality of Service (QoS) issues. These complexities make it absolutely critical that operators adopt a unified IP video monitoring solution that is capable of managing both traditional Digital TV services, such as those delivered over managed networks to a home Settop Box (STB), as well as value-added services like OTT and multiscreen. A holistic approach to video monitoring will provide operators with an increased visibility of their subscribers’ viewing experience to ensure real-time customer care. An advanced end-to-end monitoring solution dramatically lowers an operator’s expenses by measuring video quality from

multiple networks and devices, providing the operator’s support team with real-time insights into service quality issues from the edge of the network. This proactive approach to content delivery enables operators to respond much more quickly to customer problems and has been shown to reduce an operator’s mean time to repair (MTTR) by approximately 15 to 20% – a substantial saving that would make it easier and more cost-effective to deploy a competitive multiscreen service offering. One of the key differentiators of a successful IP video monitoring solution is its ability to perform intelligent analysis and intuitive visualisation on a targeted data set, rather than inundate operators with

too much operational status data. By providing a customised view of data based on a wide range of parameters such as neighbourhood, region, channel, and headend, the monitoring solution allows users to effectively filter the information in order to rapidly resolve service issues. With multiscreen technology constantly evolving, this fast and reliable approach to data management will be extremely important in helping operators manage additional devices, network types, content formats, and other technical requirements. As service providers around the world expand their video services, a unified monitoring platform like Mariner xVu can help them manage any IP video service, regardless of device or network. Deployed on more than seven million devices worldwide, Mariner xVu is designed to help any sized operator take control of their OPEX as well as customer satisfaction as they roll out innovative multiscreen video services to the connected home.

Multiscreen Is A Game Changer For Quality Assurance
Witbe’s robots are helping meet the complex challenges of QA and QoE for content viewers… By Jean-Michel Planche President & Co-Founder, Witbe www.witbe.net
Assurance uses robots. These are software appliances emulating users’ actions on any terminal: Web browsers, PC players, set-top boxes, game consoles or iOS/Android apps. They automatically run actions on the real devices, connected to the real service platforms, according to test scenarios replicating what end-users would really do. Robots are connected to the video and audio signals behind the device, enabling them to “see” and “hear” just like a subscriber. This lets them analyse the outcome of each action with the same intelligence users have, adding the ability to precisely measure response times, video and audio quality, data integrity, etc. This technology doesn’t just test the device or the app, it tests the entire service logic for consistency to make sure the whole delivery chain works properly. It’s ideal to accelerate time-to-market of a new service, a new firmware or a new application and gain trust in the release process. The same robots can also run continuous tests to monitor operations and check the usability of interactive services after launch. They act as your real-time watchdog alerting you as soon as perceived quality drops or transactions cannot complete, so you can take actions before customers call and revenues stop flooding. As the quality of multiscreen services has become a top priority, service providers and broadcasters have started using Witbe robots in very interesting ways. Some have connected robots to their competitors’ services to have objective QoE measurements and define the minimum level of performance they should achieve to be the best. Others have deployed robots in main cities, connected to several Internet service providers to monitor QoE by geography, ISP and CDN. Not only does this let them enforce service level agreements, it also gives them a precise view of what quality level can be obtained and dynamically switch CDN to deliver the best possible service at a given time and in a given place.

T

he Internet has changed our lives. It has also changed the way we deliver video content. Consumers want to watch video on any device, when they want it, whichever network they have access to. This is a complete game changer for broadcasters. It brings many new business opportunities but also introduces new Quality Assurance challenges. To increase viewer engagement, sustain brand reputation and grow revenues, broadcasters need to deliver more interactive services with improved customer experience. This means they should not only monitor the quality of their video streams, but they must now also control the effectiveness of user transactions. Are my apps working properly on every devices? Is the service

always available? What are the response times? Can customers log into their accounts? Is the purchase process working? What is the quality of streams? These questions define what we call Quality of Experience (QoE). Addressing these questions efficiently requires specific test automation solutions. Engineering and QA teams also need to build unconventional monitoring architectures designed for the particular complexities of managing video quality in unmanaged environments. Witbe’s unique approach to Quality
