ast October, Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner not only broke the 52-year-old record for the highest freefall, from 128,100 feet, but set a new record for live online viewing. Over eight million people tuned in – a statistic which prompted analysts Bain & Company to declare that the “the i-generation is becoming the mass market”. In a survey of 6,000 consumers commissioned by European cultural think tank Forum d’Avigno, the analyst concluded that despite continued economic uncertainty, the content industry was poised to regain its pre-2008 economic value. “Consumers continue to express an ever-growing appetite for content, stimulating new media experiences, including many that bridge creators and consumers in both developed economies and emerging markets,” the survey said. The pace of innovation, far from slowing down, has increased over the last few years. Apple took 20 months to sell a million iPods after the device’s introduction in 2001 – in 2010 Apple sold a million iPads in less than a month. Facebook has grown from 60 million active users in 2008 to more than one billion today, establishing itself in the exclusive league of global platforms alongside Google. And new platforms continue to emerge even faster: Instagram, Facebook’s photo sharing application, has grown from 10 million to 100 million users in less than a year. Such competition for attention is

not without casualties. Consumer expectations can be misinterpreted and technology introduced at the wrong time. For example, US household penetration for 3D TVs is only about 3% – and much less in terms of actual usage – in spite of a strong push from the consumer electronics industry. Two years after its launch, the anticipated Google TV revolution has captured less than a million households. Even the social space is not exempt from growing pains: 80% of Myspace’s users left the service and Apple shuttered Ping after only two years.

Online Video
Where tremendous growth is occurring is online video with report after report predicting ramp-ups in activity and revenue. Latest research, for example Informa Telecoms & Media, has the global OTT market worth $37 billion in five years. The analyst believes that there’s no doomsday scenario where traditional pay-TV ‘falls off the cliff’ as the likes of Netflix and Lovefilm gain traction, but that there will be a very viable OTT market characterised by a mix of advertising, subscriptions and transactions. Giles Cottle, principal analyst and author of the report commented: “It’s clear that online video is attracting real, and growing, revenues. “But this value is concentrated around a select few players. We estimate that Apple, Google, Netflix and the global broadcasters (including Hulu), combined, account

for about 70% of all online video revenue today – so if you aren’t one of these players, then the chances are you aren’t making a great deal of money from online delivery today.” As well as a growth in consumption, revenues will be driven by publishers and operators monetising content on devices beyond the PC, such as tablets and connected TVs. More than 10% of the population in the UK already own an average of four connected devices, according to ABI Research. From an advertising point of view, live online video content, which is not being monetised today by most providers, will also drive the market, it suggests. And pay-TV operators will also have a key role to play in the adoption of both standalone OTT and operator-owned multi-screen ‘TV Everywhere’ services, according to the analyst. “The continued investment of BSkyB and Virgin Media to extend their content to multiple devices, most notably smartphones and tablets using BSkyB’s Sky Go and the soon to be launched TiVo empowered Virgin Anywhere, will drive this into 2013,” it said.

Tablet Viewing
While 40% of consumers rely on television for their daily video consumption half of tablet owners have stopped using television altogether to watch certain types of content, be it news or fiction, if Bain & Company is to be believed. Indeed it is the rapid adoption of tablets (owned by 20% of adults in the US and 15% in France) and their heavy skew toward video that are changing the way consumers view

ushering in the age of social TV. “They are the new territory to conquer for the video industry,” reports the analyst. “The rapidly growing importance of social networks in video choices and consumption represents a trend that was hardly anticipated a few years ago.” Social TV is challenging traditional one-to-many content marketing, inherited from analogue broadcasting, with social and viral approaches. In France, for example, the new version of the M6 Replay tablet application directly includes social features, allowing users to share and discuss the programs they are watching with their friends and community. “As they stimulate audience appetite for new formats, connected video devices and platforms could unleash the creative energy of content producers,” notes Bain & Company. “Initiatives such as Condition One’s immersive video, which allows iPad and iPhone users to adjust their field of vision in real time within a recorded movie, is one of many innovation examples.” Ooyala’s latest quarterly Global Video Index emphasises the steady increase in web-delivered video viewed on net-connected devices highlighting that share of time spent viewing on tablets has risen by 90% over the last two quarters. More remarkable is that nearly a third of tablet viewing is being spent watching content over an hour long, with 70% of viewing at 10 minutes or more. Such increased engagement
