n theory, any modern screen can be used for video monitoring purposes. Indeed, with costeffective format converters readily available, virtually any screen can be adapted to fit a modern digital workflow. But despite significant improvements in screen technology, broadcasters rely almost exclusively on dedicated panels. Datavideo’s TLM-430 is a 4.3” look-back monitor for use as either an electronic viewfinder or for confidence playback previewing. It has a large built in tally light to ensure good communication between cameraman and the studio and also makes it easy to identify which camera is live. With a lightweight design and ease of use the TLM-430 is suitable for camera operators to monitor the video programme in real-time. The Datavideo TLM-170H, 17” widescreen LCD video monitor is designed for superior performance. Whether for a live production gallery, 19” rack monitoring, 12V OB truck or a video editing suite the TLM170H will help confidently monitor the pictures. The monitor has an on-screen menu which allows control and set up of brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, sharpness,

colour temperature and picture-inpicture. The menus can also be used to display onscreen overlays for frame marker, 4:3 marker, 16:9 marker, cinema zone marker, centre point, embedded SDI timecode and monitor title. The TLM-170 front panel buttons allow selection of source input as well as PIP, aspect ratio, blue only, pattern (colour bars), menu and audio controls. Input HD/SD sources via the rear panel SDI, HDMI, Component (Y, Pb,

Pr), S-Video (Y/C) and composite connections as well as monitoring RCA phono or embedded SDI / HDMI audio. The TLM-170 range comes as a desktop, 7U rackmount and 1U folding rackmount version. The TLM-170P is a 17.3” desktop LCD monitor that supports 1080P. Two additions to line-up of digital LCD TFT monitors are: the Datavideo TLM-700HD – a portable 7” HD/SD LCD TFT monitor with standard battery mount; and the

Datavideo TLM-702HD – a dual 7” LCD TFT monitor bank in standard 19” 3U rackmount design. These 7” broadcast monitors have HD & SD-SDI, HD & SD YUV, HDMI and composite video inputs. With a rugged metal design they are suited to field or studio use. The TLM-700HD can be powered from a standard V-Mount type battery or via the supplied mains power adapter. The monitor for both the TLM-700 as the TLM-702 provides a range of advanced features including, audio indicator when working with SDI and HDMI, safe area indicators (80%, 90% OFF), VITC timecode display, auto detection of NTSC/PAL, aspect ratio: 16:9 / 4:3 / 15:9 switchable and dual colour tally indication. Adjustment for brightness, contrast, colour and tint (Tint NTSC only). Internal colour bars and blue only function enables precise calibration. Datavideo say that the monitor is an ideal choice when working with any HD switcher, such as Datavideo’s SE-2000, and thanks to the robust steel and aluminium construction, is a standard 19” rack-mountable design, it is a perfect partner for any installation job, in production studio, OB van, presentation, stage and many others.

The New Cricketer – Spidercam

ooking over the shoulder of the batsman, waiting for the bowler to throw the ball and suddenly swooping high up into the air to give an overview of the entire pitch; only to moments later focus on the ball again as it is passed on between the outfielders. The

Jens C Peters developed the spidercam system

spidercam has brought angles to cricket broadcasting previously exclusive to computer games. But how does the system, which brings these incredible pictures to the viewers at home, work? Basically, the spidercam consists of the control station, four winches and the dolly. The control station houses the main PC with the control software and doubles as the command input position. On each corner of the venue or pitch a winch holds the catenary cables made of highly resilient Kevlar fibre. Each of these cables run through a deflection pulley and is securely fastened to the dolly. The dolly is the “camera transportation platform”, which holds the camera and is gyro-stabilised. By winding and unwinding the catenary cables the dolly is able to reach practically any position on the pitch, limited only by the position of the deflection pulleys – the higher and farther apart the pulleys, the

greater the operating range of the spidercam. Frequently used spots to attach the pulleys are floodlight posts, the roof structure or catwalks, but it is also possible to use truckmounted cranes if no suitable fixing point is available. But it is not hardware alone that makes the pictures we all love: A team of two control the system during operation: The pilot, who is in charge of moving the dolly around, and the camera operator, who is responsible for pan, tilt, zoom and focus. Together with a technician, who continuously monitors the system, they make up the spidercam crew. While the spidercam has already become a frequent visitor at cricket encounters all over the world, the way into cricket was a long one. The spidercam is an Austrian development and made its debut in Central Europe. It is usually operated by German crews, and cricket is not a popular sport in these countries – instead the main focus was initially on football, swimming competitions or boxing. For the first cricket match spidercam GmbH relied on English crews who were familiar with the sport and gradually explained the game mechanics to the other

operators. Nowadays spidercam systems are commonly involved in major cricket encounters in India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

The spidercam keeps a close eye on the Aussie batsmen
