SATIS 2012 Marks 30 Years
SATIS offers the Paris video and audio production community a tightly focused micro-IBC, reports David Kirk, without the cost and delay of travelling to Amsterdam…
In 2011, SATIS moved from the south west side of the city to the much more central Halle Freyssinet near the left bank of the Seine. This was a positive relocation, attracting over 17,000 visitors. This year’s SATIS is thus the second in the new venue and it also marks the event’s 30th anniversary. The exhibition was supported as usual by a conference and workshops. Another parallel event was the 15th International Multichannel Sound Forum, including two days at Radio France and, for the first time, a third day at SATIS. The following is a high-speed shuttle through some of the key new exhibits at the show. AJA Video Systems exhibited its KUMO 3232, a 3 gigabits per second SDI router with 32 inputs and 32 outputs in a 2RU chassis. These are claimed to be suitable for any broadcast, production or post-production environment. The 3232 is an addition to an existing line including the 1604, the 1616 and the 1RU control panel. Audio Ltd showed its new CX2 true diversity slot-in receiver This is designed for the En2 wireless microphone range, aimed primarily at documentary filmmakers and ENG organisations. The CX2 is a two-channel diversity receiver designed specifically to fit Panasonic P2 camcorders and recent-model Sony cameras. Intended for use with two En2 TX transmitters it offers up to 80 megahertz switching bandwidth, digitally controlled front-end Rio high-end colour correction and finishing software to the French market. This is available as software to run on the user’s own hardware or as a fully configured and tested PC-based turnkey system. Pablo Rio comes with a choice of Neo or compact Neo Nano colour control panels, giving customers even more flexibility in how they configure their system. Software and turnkey systems work across a wide range of data formats including high frame rate, Stereo3D, OpenEXR, RED HDRx, Sony F65, ARRI RAW, Canon, Phantom, Silicon Image and GoPro. Also on demonstration was Quantel QTube global media workflow products which “break down the facility walls and make the whole world a production studio,” according to Quantel’s Roger Thornton. QTube works with a normal internet connection, using Microsoft IIS as the web server. IIS provides authentication and content encryption to ensure only authorised access to content. Snell debuted its KudosPro range of image processors. These can perform up, down and cross conversion of all SD, HD, and 3 gigabits per second video formats, as well as a wide range of audio formats including AES, embedded audio, and Dolby E. Other features include noise reduction, legalisation, user-selectable aspect ratio conversion and extensive picture enhancement tools. Housed in a 1RU chassis, each KudosPro is front-panel controlled. Full system management and monitoring are provided via SNMP or Snell’s RollCall system. Additional functions include relay bypass, HDMI monitoring output, closed caption and timecode management, and audio-formatdescriptor support. Solid State Logic demonstrated the compatibility of its audio production products with Riedel’s RockNet and MediorNet. SSL’s C100 HDS and C10 HD digital broadcast consoles can now connect to a Riedel RockNet low latency audio distribution network and MediorNet fibreoptic transport/routing/conversion

tracking filters and three scan modes (scan for free channel, scan for transmitter and full scan across 24 megahertz with spectrum analyser display). The CX2 also incorporates the blue OLED display found on all models in the En2 range and is set up using the same dial-and-click menu. Canon displayed its recently announced Cinema EOS C500 4K Digital Cinema Camera. This is based on the ergonomics of the EOS C300 and incorporates a Super 35 millimetre 8.85 megapixel CMOS image sensor, DIGIC DV 3 image processor and a range of recording and output options specifically for 4K and 2K image acquisition. The EOS C500 offers two forms of 4K origination: productions can dynamically select DCI (SMPTE 2048-1:2011 standard) or television-centric Quad-HD (SMPTE 2036-1:2009 and ITU-R BT.1769 standards) source image formats. Uncompressed Canon RAW output is available for both 4K and 2K recording. The Canon RAW output is delivered via built-in dual 3G-SDI ports. Dual uncompressed HD-SDI outputs are also provided for external live monitoring. HD content can be written to dual onboard Compact Flash cards simultaneously, providing proxy video for offline NLE systems. Quantel introduced its new Pablo

Using Riedel’s RN334.MD MADI interface, SSL consoles can then remotely control microphone gain, phantom power and pad settings for Riedel RN series audio inter faces connected anywhere on a RockNet network. In addition SSL’s own Morse Stagebox and Alpha-Link I/O units can also be connected via MADI to Riedel’s MediorNet networks with full remote control capability maintained for SSL consoles. Sonnet showed an addition to its Echo family of Thunderbolt expansion chassis for PCIe cards. The Echo Express SE is designed for users needing a simple way to connect an adapter card to their computer and supports the majority of Thunderbolt-compatible PCIe cards. Lighter and smaller than existing Echo products, it supports a single half-length fullheight, single-width x8 PCIe 2.0 card and ships with an external 60 watt power supply. The chassis has dual Thunderbolt ports to support daisy chaining of devices. It also has a temperature-controlled fan to help keep hot-running cards cool. Vinten demonstrated its Vision blue5 pan and tilt head and tripod. This has the same features as the established Vision blue but with a higher carrying capacity of 5.5 to 12 kilogrammes to support the latest generation of larger cameras used by professional videographers. The tripod includes Vinten’s Perfect Balance technology, designed to permit consistent movement and easy positioning of the camera at any angle, as well as LF drag technology which is claimed to allow complete control of the camera at any level of movement. ■
