These were pedestal-mounted and provided the lion’s share of ESPN’s content with one feed comprising the 2D HD telecast. A number of 3Ality rigs saw action at the London Olympics for the 200-hour outside broadcast of the Games, a figure which is remarkable on any other day of the week but which pales beside the 5600 hours captured in 2D. The latest development from 3Ality is the Helix, a rig which combines technology from 3Ality’s TS-5 and Element Technica’s Atom to produce a unit suitable for handheld work and rapid lens change. CPG is constantly innovating its technology with 14 new products on its inventory including two versions of a Shadow rig optimised for the Epic and Alexa M for features and episodic TV; an X-Frame for on-set colour management and stereo control and a Control Panel for management of up to 40 cameras by a single technical director. Yet CPG’s business is not as boxshifter but as solutions provider in which a client effectively hands over the 3D production responsibility to the company for it to build and staff the workflow. New State Having only recently being introduced to 3D OB productions, Steve Cotterill, MD of ultra slo-mo specialist Editec, says he’s amazed at the number of specialist staff involved in getting a programme on-air. “The mechanical side of 3D rigs is a ‘black art’ and as such needs a high level of expertise,” he says. “From our point of view we have to supply two complete high speed camera systems and these systems list at Euro 250k each thus we are adding to an already high budget.” Editec offers two synchronised I-Movix Sprintcam Vvs cameras for use by clients including Telegenic for Sky Sports. “Our solution enables a 3D replay to be instantly inserted into the programme in exactly the same way as you would with any normal 3D camera - via an EVS server,” he explains. “When recorded to the server all material is available on the network to assist with editing and archiving. “This gives the programme producer the ability of offering a true 3D replay where usually only a 2D originated replay would have been available - in native 1080i at shooting speeds up to 2500 fps.” Toshiba distributor and specialist supplier of mini-HD cameras SeeSense, claims it could supply two cameras and prime lenses for “well under” £20K making its solution “extremely economical” compared to a £140K mirror rig system. “If you can get by with using prime lenses rather than zooms then we have a proven and very successful compact 3D camera solution,” says MD Nigel Paine.
