been considered as a standalone solution. What we see happening is an integration of DS into its environment. Both an integration with other systems (through content sharing, synchronisation) as an integration with the user / visitor (through interaction, smartphone integration). We believe that in the future, DS screen will have been a transparent part of the image and sound ecosystem, working together with smartphones, projectors and other software and hardware tools.” Overall, across rental, corporate and AV, there appears to be good results, with new markets and new opportunities emerging. Cinema projection is more cyclical, with many theatres taking a pause after ‘going digital’ and then 3D, before waiting for the next surge towards 4K. Rate (HFR) movies, beginning in December 2012 with the advent of Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ and for that they’ll need a software upgrade to Series two digital cinema projectors and an integrated media block.” Secondly, laser projection with enormous advantages in brightness and colour rendition. This is an area that is high up the agenda for Barco as well: “Laser solves many issues that industry has dealt with for years (lamp swaps, light degradation) as well as introducing opportunities and functionality that was impossible b e f o re ( w i d e colour gamut, high contrast r a t i o s ) . Barco has demonstrated laser projector prototypes in the past few months and is determined to lead the industry in this next important step forward.” Calibre sums it up: “The advent of high power laser-based projectors is likely to be the next step-change in technology.”

shapes, all configurations, all content everywhere. They may not always know what they’re asking for, technically speaking, but customers are really pushing AV designers to come up with creative video wall designs that deliver what they want given the parameters of existing display technology.” Calibre’s Brooksbank agrees: “Our main growth is in our HQView warp and blend processing for large venue projectors such as those typically used on-set or events-based productions. Designers are getting more creative with projectors so the need to warp images to suit display surface curvature or to align images when tiling and blending multiple projectors is becoming more mainstream.” ■

Orad Boosts RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg
RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg, a member of RTL group, has expanded its use of Orad solutions for its broadcast graphic production. The Orad-driven workﬂow now includes the Orad HDVG video graphics rendering platform, Maestro on-air graphic suite, 3DPlay controller, 3DWeather prediction system and ProSet virtual studio to power the distinct on-air look for all of RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg’s programmes. Jacques van Luijk, Head of Productions at RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg said: “With one general hardware platform for all graphic tasks – Orad´s HDVG – we are able to achieve maximum efficiency. The power of this workstation is unmatched. We produce daily on-air, weather, and interactive graphics with iPad and soon also virtual shows. The modularity of the system helped us face all upcoming tasks by going step by step. We are very satisﬁed and are looking forward to the new challenge of virtual studio production.” RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg, Luxembourg’s largest private TV channel, originally chose Orad’s solutions after observing how other RTL stations utilise Orad solutions to achieve their sophisticated graphic look efficiently. RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg adopted Orad’s Maestro on-air graphic suite for its main news programme ‘De Journal’ and for its daily news programmes, transmitted 24-hours a day via DVB-T, cable and satellite. Orad’s 3DPlay graphics controller was successfully added shortly afterwards for RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg’s election productions. With the ambition to make the election productions unique, Orad’s Interact with iPad support was added to give on-air personalities the ability to interact with graphics directly from their iPad. in many productions such as news, to display important information on show-charts. RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg also relies daily on Orad’s 3DWeather prediction system, integrated with Meteomedia, one of Europe’s leading weather providers, for the

main evening weather programmes as well as the shorter magazine weather format shows. Last month, RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg also extended its use of Orad solutions by implementing ProSet, Orad’s virtual studio solution, for its weather production. ■
