has provided the London firm with over 30 Pro Tools systems (20HD and 10 LE). In the last year alone, Scrub has also supplied M o l i n a r e with three 32-Fader ICON D-Command ES/HD Accel systems, four 2 4 - F a d e r D-Command/ HD Accel systems, and Avid Media Composer Media satellites to complement the systems, and Genelec 5.1 monitoring systems in most of its facilities. Scrub has played an integral role in the upgrade by providing support and technical services throughout the process. Century Communications has made a major capital investment in Molinare since becoming majority owners in 2008. As such, Molinare COO Scott Holmgren was tasked with the job of deciding where and how the money would be best spent. Having previously served as the firm’s technical director, Holmgren took the opportunity to standardise the company’s audio facilities so that all its dubbing suites are now predominantly Pro Tools-based. The dominance of Pro Tools throughout Molinare’s dubbing, Tracklay, edit and Foley suites began when it acquired Fusion Post Production in 2006, whose facilities were predominantly based on the Avid DAW. The recent addition of the Avid consoles now provides Molinare with an additional level of control over the software. “Molinare is one the biggest names in the facilities industry with a worldwide reputation for talent and quality,” says Tina Wallace. “Recent investment has allowed them to take a fresh look and adopt an innovative approach with this project and working with one of the best technical operations teams there is has been an enormous highlight for us. We look forward to a continued relationship as they move even further forward.” In Athens, Basement Productions has installed a Solid State Logic Nucleus DAW controller/audio hub in Studio One, designed to handle 5.1 mixing projects ranging from audio post and music production to video editing. “After testing a few popular DAW controllers, Nucleus was the way – possibly the only way – to go in terms of build quality, onboard features, and the best DAW interoperability by far,” says Basement Productions CEO Nick Giatrakos. “The communication protocol is easy to install and use, and has proven reliable when selecting different workstations running simultaneously on the same Mac host computer. The Nucleus is very well built, clearly designed to cope with heavy usage, which is what post work is all about. “By focusing on their sound and not the science of controlling it, in-house and guest engineers alike are able to customise and personalise their way of working to suit their own needs; less mousing around makes for a much better approach to mixing.” Another recent SSL installation is at The Room 36 in Vienna, Austria, which has settled into the massive new film, television and media production complex, Media Quarter Marx, in St Marx Square, showcasing a 24-channel Solid State Logic Duality SE console in Studio 1 and Nucleus in Studio 2. The facility was designed to offer the highest level recording and post-production experience to its

7.1 surround. “Our daily workflow has benefitted greatly from the significant new features and speed of the new Pro Tools HDX systems. There was a very tight turn around for this upgrade and Scrub worked with us to ensure we had a seamless transition. We have been working with Scrub for many years now and the delivery of this project is an example of the high level of support that we have grown to regard as standard procedure from Scrub,” says Anthony Kirkland from The Farm Group. Scrub Sales Manager Tina Wallace comments: “It is an honour to include The Farm Group among our clients. We have worked closely with their exceptional technical and operational staff since Scrub opened its doors eight years ago. For the past six months we have been carefully planning the delivery and installation of these systems, preapproved and tested, into a small window of down time between two of the UK’s highest rated primetime shows. It’s a pleasure to have been involved and to continue to support The Farm as they set a new standard for audio post.” Also in London, audio postproduction facility Hackenbacker have become early adopters in the UK to invest in VoiceQ, a cueing software solution for recording ADR and dubbing film and TV projects for international markets. ADR, which stands for automated dialogue replacement, is an important part of Hackenbacker’s workload and one that requires time, skill and patience to achieve the best possible results. Although billed as automated, there is still a lot of manual work needed to set up an ADR session, which requires the replacement of original dialogue with new studio performances by actors.

Nigel Heath, founder of Hackenbacker, says: “Dialogue recording and replacement is a vital and integral part of making films and television programmes. It is common practice to re-record and synchronise a large proportion of dialogue during the completion of projects. Successful ADR requires a great deal of skill because you need to get the best performance from the actors, while also concentrating on capturing a high quality recording. “As ADR specialists, we were keen to make the process easy and straightforward for the actors we work with, and as fast and efficient as possible for our production company clients. The new VoiceQ software achieves both these aims and we are delighted to now offer this as standard to our ADR clients.” VoiceQ was created by KIWA International, a New Zealand-based company, part of the KIWA Media Group, which develops technical solutions for the film and television industry and distributes these solutions to a global market. Hackenbacker’s Chris Stumer adds: “VoiceQ is incredibly easy to use and is much faster than traditional ADR methods. Actors love the built-in cue system, which is visual as well as audible, and because VoiceQ offers a very accurate cue for every word it really does enhance performance levels. The actors are freed from looking down at scripts if they so choose and they can often record a scene in one take rather than line by line. Since installing VoiceQ, we have used it to great effect on a number of projects and have succeeded in saving our clients a lot of studio time.” Meanwhile, Molinare has made a major investment in Pro Tools control.
