Automation Needs Innovative Solutions Cont.

a-box through the control software. Errington still sees a place for traditional broadcast engineering in general, and particularly for live situations where there is greater integration of equipment like vision mixers and graphics workstations, but feels the move towards IT is already happening. “We are seeing companies like Pebble Beach Systems offering both kinds of technology,” he says, “and there are also lots of manufacturers of channel-in-a-box systems. And in general people are looking for much more out of the same equipment.” A recent arrival on the TV automation scene is French company Netia. Although it has been involved in radio automation since 1993, it only started working with vision in 2005 and then purely on the media asset management (MAM) side.
Mix & Match
Product Director Mus Rezzoug says this is because “more and more customers don’t want to put their eggs in the same basket” but do want the freedom to mix and match their automation control, MAM and server options. “Customers don’t like to be tied up with one vendor today because there is no flexibility,” he says. Many of the major automation manufacturers have specific MAM programs - including Crispin with its asset and archive management offering and Snell with the new Momentum system - but even if a company does have its own product for managing material, there is the growing philosophy that openness and customer choice is the way of the future. It seems the days of automation being something hidden away at the end of the broadcast chain are now behind us. ■
