Gallery Upgrades
Oxygen DCT MD Steve Hathaway discusses the upgrade of a major sports broadcaster’s production gallery
Moving from tried and trusted CRT monitors presented a potential hurdle as some staff had experienced previous problems with LCD technology. The client realised that the run of the mill monitors were not going to deliver the quality pictures needed for his high calibre blue chip organisation. Oxygen DCT’s choices are founded in experience working for major broadcast manufacturers. Observing trends in the monitoring sector of the broadcast industry, Oxygen DCT decided to create a portfolio of LCD monitors which overcame the issues of poor performance. The resulting Evolution Pro Series, elevated standards and at the same time gives customers a choice of solutions. Addressing the top end of the LCD monitor sector, the company partnered up with German LCD specialist design

and manufacturing company Penta, who developed products with the EBUs partners IRT, with teutonic precision, exceeding ITU REC 709 colorimetry performance. Oxygen DCT demonstrated the exceptional picture qualities and proposed monitors from Penta. Having gained approval, Oxygen DCT then designed the new production gallery from the ground up, incorporating a number of quad split multiviewers, audio facilities, timecode, clocks, tallys, UMDs and GPIs as well as network control of the monitors. The lightweight metal ‘stack’ structure was designed to incorporate all the variety of equipment and to ergonomically position the centre of the main monitors at eye level, thus alleviating any potential physical strain on the production staff who may be in position for several hours. Having agreed the design and been given a clean site, Oxygen DCT’s project team installed the stack and cabling and with the equipment in place, it was commissioned and local staff were successfully trained. As market demand increases, Oxygen DCT has produced a portfolio of +100 LCD monitors, three multiviewer systems and over 100 signal processing, distribution and conversion products, providing an extensive ‘tool kit’ for building gallery and video wall monitoring systems. ■
