KOBA Serves Up Latest Kit
The Korea International Broadcast Audio and Lighting Equipment Show has attracted many top exhibitors – David Kirk ﬁnds it an easy show to navigate…
Some 240 exhibitors converged on the Korea Exhibition Center in Seoul for KOBA 2012. Although the show is only three weeks ahead of Broadcast Asia, not every Korean broadcaster or facilities manager wants to trek out to Singapore. The event is supported by a fair number of the leading-brand manufacturers one would expect to see at NAB and IBC. KOBA is one of the easiest 56 broadcast shows to navigate. Maps of each hall, clearly showing the occupying company at every stand, can be previewed online or downloaded and printed from www. kobashow.com. The exhibition occupies three halls, each grouped into one or more product categories: Hall A has three zones: audio equipment; pro-audio equipment; pro-lighting and stage equipment. Apart from Leader and Yamaha, the majority of exhibitors here are Korean manufacturers not normally seen at the big international shows. Hall C has two zones: displays and 3H/HDTV; post-production and delivery. Internationally known companies exhibiting in this location include Adobe, Blackmagic Design and Korean video monitor manufacturer TVLogic. Hall D is allocated to production and broadcasting equipment and is supported by globally familiar companies such as Arri, Canon, Etere, For-A, Harmonic, Harris, Ikegami, Libec, Panasonic, Quantel, Shotoku, Sony, Techno-Crane and Tektronix. Korea is home to some of the world’s largest consumer video display manufacturers, in both senses, and is leading the push beyond 1920 x 1080 pixel highdeﬁnition into 4K ‘quad-HD’. Arri, Canon, Sony and Panasonic all promoted cameras for this new standard, initially focused on the digital cinema market. 4K is already being positioned as an ideal format for autostereoscopic 3D displays as a way of offsetting the loss in picture detail caused by lenticular ﬁlters. Adobe promoted its new ‘Creative Cloud’ [see page 36 – Ed]. A hub for making, sharing and delivering creative work, this is centred around Adobe CS 6 software including graphic design, web authoring, video and digital imaging tools. Blackmagic Design exhibited its new Cinema Camera which contains a 2.5K sensor, integral high-bandwidth SSD recorder, open ﬁle format support and a built in LCD with metadata entry. Etere’s KOBA activity centred on promoting the company’s MERP media asset management system. indexing, scheduling, programme management, web integration and video logging. For-A exhibited its new HVS390HS video production switcher. Available in 1 M/E and 2 M/E versions, it includes 16 HD/SDSDI inputs and eight outputs (expandable to 24 inputs and 13 outputs), with frame synchronisers for all inputs. Harmonic demonstrated version 2.0 of its Iris video quality monitoring and analytics software. This incorporates an enhanced graphical user interface and enables service providers to monitor and analyse their use of Harmonic broadcast encoders in real-time, using the data to help optimise bandwidth and video quality. Ikegami demonstrated its new Unicam HD multiformat cameras. These include the new HDK-97A 16-bit portable HD companioncamera and the HDK-97C 3G ﬁeld production camera which supports 1080/60p 4:2:2 and 1080/60i 4:4:4. A docking-style camera, the HDK-97A also features a ﬁbretransmission system from the head to its CCU. Quantel demonstrated the latest version of its Pablo colour correction and ﬁnishing system. This now supports the import of Sony F65 RAW ﬁles, providing F65 users with the highest quality post workﬂow for their projects. TVLogic showed additions to its range of broadcast, production and post-production monitors. These include the LQM-471W 47-inch 1920 x 1080 quad input monitor designed for multi-source monitoring in control rooms. With four SDI inputs/outputs, the LQM471W supports multiple display conﬁgurations and incorporates a waveform/vectorscope, closedcaption support, timecode display and remote control. ■
