Networks
Panasonic announced at the same event that it is teaming with Aframe to create the Panasonic Production Network (PPN), a cloud video production network that allows content producers to upload and view high-quality video from dedicated cloud servers. Panasonic has targeted New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Miami, Boston and Dallas as the ﬁrst cities to locate its upload centres. Each of these links to Aframe’s cloud video production servers in the US. Panasonic anticipates that its ﬁrst upload centre will be operational by late May or early June. There will be plenty of competition. California-based WeVideo reported in April that it has secured $19 million to develop its cloud-based collaborative video editing system. Founded in 2011 by Norway-based Inspera, WeVideo is already providing online video learning for students. It is now bringing collaborative video editing to the newly released Google Drive cloud storage and collaboration service. The integrated WeVideo app allows subscribers to edit the content they have stored in Google Drive. Google Drive is available with 5GB of storage for free and the option to purchase additional storage.

Data stored online can be accessed from anywhere and, with the right safeguards, should be less at risk of theft or mechanical damage than any conventional storage medium. Latest-generation high-capacity storage chips incur the extra risk of being dangerously easy to mislay. (I shall not forget pushing an SD card absent-mindedly into the adjacent vertical CD/DVD drive of my iMac before discovering that Apple had fortunately made allowance for this.) In a large organisation or even a small one requiring simultaneous access to content from members of a production team, cloud-based storage offers an additional layer which would sit in very neatly alongside existing locally networked data archives.

Software Services
Cloud-based on-demand software (so-called software-as-a-service or SaaS) is a very different kettle of ﬁsh. The evident popularity of lowcost software promoted by Apple for its iPad tablet computers leads naturally in the direction of SaaS but it will have to contend with the natural human urge to retain a healthy degree of independence. It must also compete in a world of ever declining local storage media costs along with consistently increasing data capacity for a given size of device. Look again at the Quantel diagram and you will notice that the cloud element is just one of several storage options. Long may it remain that way. ■
