For Post Professionals, It’s All About The Workflow
By Michael Grotticelli
At this year’s NAB Show, postproduction professionals were pleasantly surprised to see that vendors clearly understand the challenges of today’s multi-format, multi-delivery platform world – one in which content is created once and prepared for delivery in numerous formats. New features are being made available to help solve inherent bottleneck problems. Unlimited remote collaboration using cloudbased technologies is becoming more mature and reliable for post professionals to implement. It saves time and money and allows a production company to produce more content with the same (or less) resources. Two years ago this was certainly not the case. For example, Avid announced Interplay Sphere, a real-time access solution enabling professionals to acquire, access, edit and finish stories anytime, from anywhere. Leveraging a cloud-based architecture, Interplay Sphere gives contributors the freedom to work in a completely distributed environment. “Consumer enthusiasm for on-demand media services that support multiple viewing platforms is on the rise,” said David Mercer, Vice President and Principal Analyst, Strategy Analytics. “Cloudenabled applications can help meet this increasing demand by making it possible for professionals to collaborate from remote locations in near real-time to create and distribute stories more efficiently to their viewers, wherever they are and whatever devices they are using.” Interplay Sphere, along with Avid’s NewsCutter and Media Composer video editing software, provide distributed production capabilities allowing journalists to access and edit video footage captured at the scene of breaking news along with media files from any other Interplay Sphere-connected location. This effectively extends the boundaries of Avid’s editing technology – essentially breaking down the walls of the newsroom. In addition to Avid, companies like Adobe Systems, Autodesk, Blackmagic Design, Grass Valley and Quantel all showed new enhancements to their respective products that make 2K and even 4K workflows more efficient. However, professionals care less about higher resolution (although it is critical to replacing film acquisition) and more about being able to work with this large amount of data. Part of this improved workflow includes the use of the Thunderboltenabled devices that take advantage of the high-speed connectivity. Companies that make I/O devices and those that make storage arrays/ drives appear to recognise that large data throughout is key to a practical 2K/4K workflow. Adobe’s Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Story, Media Encoder and Photoshop, along with two new tools, SpeedGrade CS6, for professional colour grading, and Prelude CS6 for ingest, logging and transcoding – essential tasks in a modern file-based workflow. For advanced video editing, Premiere Pro CS6 incorporates a new user interface, trimming and OpenCL support in the new turbocharged Mercury Playback Engine. After Effects CS6 is the biggest release in a decade, with huge performance gains and new 3D features. In addition to unveiling a new DSLR-style digital cinema camera, Blackmagic Design announced a software update to its DaVinci Resolve. Version 9 includes a newly designed user interface that is extremely fast to use and eliminates unnecessary clicks and settings to get working fast. A job can be up and running in three clicks: one to log in, one to drop media into the project and the next to grade. Improvements include a streamlined project import, export and selection workflow, scrubbable media thumbnails to speed up shot selection, production metadata fields for entering on set shot notes and larger colour control palettes to give faster access to grading tools. There are clear graphical palettes for control of power windows, keys, sizing, tracking and stabilisation, camera raw and data burn-ins. The Gallery now includes resizable stills displayed in user named albums and 48 “prebuilt looks” for fast grade selection. Grass Valley showed version 6.5 of its EDIUS HD NLE software, with a comprehensive 3D editing workflow and native support for raw footage captured with digital cinematography cameras from RED Digital. The new EDIUS software boasts a comprehensive 3D workflow, complete with 3D stereoscopic editing tools and new 3D support across its editing peripherals. EDIUS software and hardware supports all of the most common stereoscopic modes – including the side-by-side, top and bottom and line-by-line display methods. It also incorporates a new Flash exporter, many improvements to the Layouter tool, native image stabilisation, built-in loudness meter and closed caption/audio bit stream (Dolby-E, AC-3) pass-through support. For Quantel, the NAB show was a chance to experiment with techniques that help streamline the content creation pipeline. Customer service was also a key focal point. In addition to new enhancements to its Pablo and Neo editing programs, Quantel announced RAMS customer support. The software actively monitors the health of performancecritical aspects of the customers’ systems. Any potential deterioration in key system parameters triggers an automatic message to Quantel’s support team, who, the company said, will recommend preventive action.

Changing Goals
File format compatibility is a Holy Grail that customers want to see on their systems sooner rather than later. An Autodesk commissioned study reported that editors and studio owners are challenged with limited budgets, file management complexity and tight project timelines. Of the respondents, 42% said dealing with different file formats was one of their biggest challenges. At NAB, Autodesk introduced Smoke 2013 featuring a unified creative workflow that brings powerful node-based compositing right in the timeline at a radically reduced price. Speaking of redesigns, Adobe Systems created a buzz with the introduction of its Creative Suite 6 Production Premium software package. It includes updates to

Throughput Focus
While there were many feature enhancements and product introductions to be seen at NAB 2012, the overall consensus is that manufacturers are now keenly focused on continuing to improve their customers’ workflow. And that’s a good thing, where everybody wins. With improved workflow comes a preferred way of working and loyalty to a particular company. The ability to do more with less is a necessity, one that can ultimately be the difference between a postproduction company’s success or failure. ■
