Volicon Extends Observer
By Andrew Sachs, Vice President of Product Management
The Observer video logging and monitoring solution has been deployed widely by media companies to test outgoing signals and to troubleshoot video faults and errors quickly and cost-effectively. The Volicon system also has addressed the requirements of compliance logging by providing the continuous recording necessary for broadcasters to verify that the right balance of advertising and programme content has been aired and to show whether or not guidelines for offensive language and images have been met appropriately. Through ongoing refinement of the Observer line, Volicon has extended the system’s utility in and beyond the areas of compliance logging and troubleshooting. Ad monitoring and verification are among the broader business functions enabled by the Observer system, which gives desktop users a browser-based interface through which to perform advertising verification tasks such as locating specific commercials from the as aired broadcast stream, downloading clips, and emailing them to customers to verify that ads ran as scheduled and as contracted. When equipped with content matching capabilities, Observer can automatically flag specific audio cues in an advertisement and notify the operator. Comparing traffic schedules, as run logs from the automation system, traffic schedules, and operator sign on / off data against logged content, Observer also can identify any necessary ‘make-goods’. The recent development of loudness monitoring and NAVE decoding, logging, and alerting modules has added even greater power to the Observer family while extending its value for broadcasters. Engineered to measure AC3 dialnorm levels and compliant with ITU BS.1770-1 and BS.1770-2, ATSC A/85 RP 2011, CALM Act, EBU R128, and ARIB TR-B32, Volicon’s new loudness module for the Observer line enables media companies to monitor loudness in real-time, as well as provide an affidavit of compliance for regulators and advertisers when required. The combination of logging with loudness measurement – complete with graphing, measurement export and integration and reports with as run logs – provides improved visibility of audio, video and measurement data, enables more accurate selection of aired content, and supports faster, more practical access to questionable content. The new NAVE decoding, logging, and alerting module ratings assurance tool enables broadcasters or networks to ensure proper transmission and delivery of NAVE codes to Nielsen monitoring equipment. content, users can troubleshoot more effectively while monitoring video service provider return feeds. Volicon’s introduction of MPEG transport stream monitoring capabilities to the Observer line aids operators in managing the volume and complexity of broadcast and network services. The Volicon Observer TS monitoring system, which accommodates a broad array of inputs including ASI, QAM, 8-VSB, and DVB-T MPEG TS interfaces, improves system density for HD and SD programmes. Because Observer TS logs the full transport stream, users can look back in time to examine content and effectively eliminate chronic issues with service handoffs. Low bit rate proxies and DVR like frame accurate controls allow for easy content review, even over an enterprise network or WAN. Offering valuable data and an array of robust monitoring and measurement tools, the Observer has evolved into a multipurpose tool with features that support sales and marketing, strategic planning, and business operations, as well as engineering. ■

Merging Technologies In A Merging Market
One manufacturer is living up to its name
There is a merging of video and audio and also a merging of market sectors. Products like the Ovation Media Server and Sequencer, the Horus Networked Audio Converter and Pyramix Virtual Studio have a myriad of applications in broadcast, post production, music recording, live sound, fixed installations and theatre. VCube also appears in post-production, film dubbing, broadcast and anywhere where a virtual VCR is needed. MXFix has its place in a variety of workflows in playout centres, post production and broadcast facilities. It is the move into broadcast that has seen the biggest change in the Merging product line. This has been often driven by customer demand where some enhancements or extensions to existing products have been requested to achieve a different result. MXFix is a good example where an existing MXF clean up and rewrap tool has been enhanced to perform loudness checking and correction with the option to decode and re-encode Dolby E®. This was driven by customer request and has been modified as more users have been trying the product. This flexible and customer driven focus has been a key to Merging’s success over the last 20 years. The plethora of different interface options on many of the products as well as many of the software developments have been as a result of direct input from the user base and this is something the company is keen to maintain. There is a danger that too much development and too many differing

Horus Converter

opinions can result in an unstable and seemingly unfinished product. The input is always sanity checked and beta tested before release. Forming strategic partnerships with other compatible manufacturers is a new key strategy. Ovation in particular often needs to be used in conjunction with display technology in the museum, theme park and public event categories so a recent joint development programme with Dataton is a logical step and will provide a really comprehensive system for large scale video and audio playback. Compatibility with Medialon show control is also

important in the theme park world where so many shows are controlled this way. NAB’s major event is the appearance of Ovation on the Ross Video stand. Ross will be using the Ovation Platinum MassCore system in conjunction with their OverDrive automation system as a mix-interface for the Ross studio environment. Ovation, which can be fully controlled over the RAP (Ross Automation Protocol), will be providing a vast amount of mix minus busses in a small 2U chassis. ■
