InSIGHT Signal Silver Moment For Trilogy Communications
By Steven Preston Trilogy Communications co-founder Roger Stanwell and General Manager Barry Spencer look back over the company’s 25 years of broadcast engineering successes.
Trilogy Communications now employs 60 staff and has a £8.6m turnover began operations in 1986, in what one of the founders Roger Stanwell modestly describes as a “me too” type of concept, but one with a crucial difference “we set out to develop a better mousetrap – to engage with customers and to help them develop better products”. The three founders, Tim Hardisty, Roger Stanwell and Ian Malcolmson, whose initials make up the first three letters of “Trilogy”, began their business discussions at Roger’s kitchen table. Among the first products offered was a sync pulse generator, which the Milk Race cycling event”. From these early beginnings Trilogy intercom systems such as Mercury, and now Gemini which adds broadcast VoIP capability, have grown to encompass sophisticated communication requirements in the broadcast, defence and emergency services spheres. Trilogy was among the first to see the benefits of using IP technology for the carriage of intercom not only within a location but also to remote sites. A technology that was fledgling at the time, but one that was noticed by the US defence establishment. Stanwell said that the core IP concept was more difficult to implement than first envisaged, but were resolved successfully to make intercom over IP a viable alternative to the then expensive alternatives of leased lines and satellite communications solutions. Barry Spencer said clients frequently need a flexible approach to the implementation of systems. “The National Hockey League in Canada wanted a simple communications device at each of around 30 ice hockey rinks – around the country. While this was based on the standard Mercury PC card system, this has recently been extended to include a “wake-up” cue light system. That’s all being handled by our software with the control information being routed over the IP network,” he said. The success of the UKbased company overseas led to a Queen’s Award for Export in 2006. But Stanwell said that perhaps the finest achievement was successfully implementing the massive communications infrastructure deployed by the BBC for its election coverage. This huge system based on multiple Commander matrices

Commander matrix systems and around 350 panel connections, plus another 60 or so panels rented in for the election day, is the largest broadcast implementation of Trilogy’s technology. “One of our experts joins their team and is involved in prefabricating the whole system and discussions with the editorial team on the communications control – who needs what facilities – and is there for the rehearsals and for the 48 hours in the run-up to the election and through the night and in to the following day – a gruelling schedule. Typically people can be very much on edge. It can be very tense. Fortunately he is a calm and collected individual who can provide them with the services that they need. “It’s certainly one of the most demanding situations for a comms system.” A thriving business operating in 70 countries, Trilogy’s range of intercom systems and master reference generators equip broadcasters around the globe that include the BBC, ITV, Al Jazeera, CBS, ABC Hearst-Argyle, Fox TV, France Television, Arqiva, Star TV, Times TV, Qatar TV, Reuters. Stanwell attributes this success to being first-and-foremost a “people business” based on “building solid relationships with both customers and distributors”.

has to cater for hundreds of users spread throughout some 300 of the Corporation’s outlying sites. Spencer agreed: “Yes, we still work very closely with the BBC during elections and provide onsite technical engineering support. “We supplied BBC News with our Commander systems back in the 1990s for use at Television Centre – a massive network. “In addition they wanted specific equipment that was only for use

Stanwell said was “digital and around three-quarters of the price of our competitors.” Stanwell recounts that at that time, the depth of broadcast engineering and technical knowledge in the BBC and ITV meant the assistance companies received was often substantial. And as Trilogy inked contracts with the BBC and ITV, the development of products progressed rapidly. “We had the first 8-bit digital test signal generator before SDI was in vogue,” said Stanwell, “and the first intercoms we were asked to devise was between the rider and pillion passenger cameraman for

during elections, general, local, and US. This is deployed as a general communications backbone for the people – researchers and analysts – who really only come together to feed the information used by the on-camera presenters.” Spencer said that the BBC system, comprised of 12
