Litepanels Ships Hilio LED Daylight Lamps
Hilio, the latest innovation from Litepanels, a Vitec Group brand, is now shipping. The powerful daylight colour balanced Hilio is a small-footprint LED fixture designed to replace the traditional HMI lamp, but without the HMI disadvantages of power consumption and heat generation, short bulb life and the need to carry a ballast. The high output Hilio provides the same light output at 5600 degrees K as a 575W HMI, but draws just 115W – a huge saving in power and a reduction in unwanted heat. The LED source offers a “bulb” life of 50,000 hours, and can be operated from a 24V battery as well as from an AC power source. “We work closely with lighting directors around the world and they told us they needed something with the traditional Litepanels flexibility and convenience which could fill the HMI role,” said Pat Grosswendt, Technical Director at Litepanels. “We now have LED lighting fixtures that can balance exposure against the intensity of natural sunlight in both exterior and interior backlit situations. Lighting directors, gaffers and photographers are no longer constrained by the cumbersome requirements of traditional HMI fixtures.” Like all Litepanels LED fixtures, Hilio is dimmable from 100 per cent to zero with no noticeable colour shift and is controllable by either an on-fixture knob or via a DMX dimmer. Hilio’s 15 degree beam angle outputs an even wash of soft light to provide a natural filling of shadows in even the harshest sunlight, over distances up to 7.5m. The slim (356mm wide x 254mm high x 102mm deep) Hilio is equipped with a standard yoke for easy mounting and positioning on light stands or in a grid. It features an integrated rear

gimbal plate for accessories and power supply attachment as well as a front gel slot. Because of its low power consumption it runs cool, so can be used in high density lighting or close to performers, without any problems.

LTFS Rewriting Archiving For LTO Tape Systems
By Howard Twine, Product Manager, SGL
The Linear Tape File System (LTFS) finally achieves portability between systems, allowing tapes containing archived material to be transferred between disparate systems. LTFS is not a file-wrapper, but a standardised method of writing data to tape and providing descriptive information about that content. In essence, this means that data and metadata on an LTFS-formatted tape can be read by any LTFS-compatible system, and the material on the media can be quickly retrieved or distributed to other departments. In addition, OS drivers available from tape drive vendors allow users to view LTFS-formatted tapes on a Windows, Mac or Linux computer as removable devices with their own folders, and to copy files to and from tapes in the same manner as they would use removable USB drives, for example. As part of a larger archive management system, such as SGL’s FlashNet, LTFS becomes an extremely powerful medium. Previously, data written to an archive tape was done so in a proprietary fashion – the same software that wrote the data to the tape was required to read the data. With the advent of LTFS, content can be written to tape by any LTFScompatible software (including native OS drivers), and read from the tape by any other LTFS-capable system. As the number of vendors supporting LTFS increases, more efficient workflows are created, as existing data transfer ‘paths’ are shortened and bottlenecks are bypassed. For example, content can now be delivered directly into an archive on LTFS tape. Traditionally, the archive has been the last port-ofcall for file-based media; however, with LTFS, content captured on location can be quickly transferred to tapes which are then introduced into the tape archive library. The archive management software, such as SGL FlashNet, then pushes notification to controlling systems, (e.g. Media Asset Management) that the new material has arrived. GUIDs (Globally Unique Identifiers) are assigned to the content, and any conflicts with existing MAM placeholders are automatically resolved. Exporting content from the archive (for example for Disaster

The LTFS workflow

Recovery, for transfer to external service providers, or for return of licensed files at contract end) is equally simple. The required archived content is copied to LTFS tapes, which are then exported from the library. The archive management software (e.g. SGL FlashNet) sends notification to controlling systems that the content has been exported. As these are LTFS-formatted tapes, proprietary software is not required by the recipient in order to retrieve the data. Any computer equipped with the free LTFS driver will do. The implications of LTFS for the broadcast industry are wide-reaching, particularly as complimentary standards such as AS02 emerge and are adopted. The easy exchange of archived content, with its metadata, between systems is something that broadcast’s file-based workflows have been sorely missing, and with LTFS it’s finally possible.
