Arena-style Shows Boost Stage Bookings

While the UK’s TV and film studios are reporting healthy forward bookings, boosted by the popularity for arena-style shows such as The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and Dancing on Ice, they also have to counter the budget squeeze continuing to afflict commissions.

There’s been a substantial increase in feature enquiries with shooting dates between September 2011 and March 2012 and TV occupation is up with ongoing shows as well as new interest. In fact it’s the strongest interest since the detrimental effects of the SAG writers strike and the poor dollar/ pound exchange rate in 2009.” This improving but competitive climate has coincided with a and MOTD as well as Mastermind, Tonight’s the Night and indies such as Avalon. ITV is also soon to embark on the £20m move of its Coronation Street set to Trafford Wharf, just a few hundred yards from MediaCity, which should be ready early 2013. ITV has also just completed a £5m revamp of its Leeds Studios, home to Emmerdale. “Without question there is an oversupply in the market,” says MediaCityUK Head of Studios Andy Waters. “Some of that capacity many other studios take far longer to set up. Equally our facilities are equipped for live audiences with resilience for transmission. A lot of other facilities wheel in trucks but only have one TX option in the gallery.” The sale of the iconic 50-yearold building (among others, home to Zeppotron’s 8 out of 10 Cats and Magnum’s Chris Moyles Quiz Show, both for C4) is a key part of the corporation’s overall property strategy, which involves moving thousands of staff to MediaCity

Our studios and facilities are designed for fast-turnaround so we can get several shows in and out of them in the same week whereas

However the sale doesn’t automatically mean the studios will be closing. “We have a couple of options,” says Thomas. “One is a straight sale of the site and in that scenario we find a new home. The second option is a joint venture in which we remain on site but with a new landlord.” He admits to some market confusion surrounding the

uncertain future of TVC. “We could be on this site or somewhere else but lead times for major shows (like Strictly Come Dancing) are such that there is no need to worry,” says Thomas. “There is a clear demand in London for studios of this quality not only from the BBC as a programme producer but also as a commissioner and from a large number of indies as well.” The pressure on budgets has led BBC Studios and Post Production to even greater collaboration with its customers, according to Thomas. “We’ve raised our game,” he explains. “We’ve proved we’re willing to innovate and introduce new workflows to support productions through this difficult business climate.” He cites BBC S&PP’s deal with Endemol to take over the management of its Bristol studio and post production services for Deal Or No Deal, as the first of a series of new initiatives. “In that case we are able to deliver a show for Endemol very cost effectively. Historically people expect us to trade out of TVC but it shows we are up for doing deals. There will be a number of other projects like that, announced in the next few months,” says Thomas. With production purses tighter than ever before, producers are trying to get as much bang as they can for their buck. “Studio facilities have to be more technically ingenious, with practical cost effective ideas for clients utilising crew well and suggesting carefully considered studio recording schedules,” says Mediahouse head of studios Cherry Portbury. “The ability to provide all production services – transmission, graphics and post production is an added advantage, where clients can be provided with savings across the whole production process.” Even major studios such as Pinewood have to demonstrate they can offer a more complete package and help productions achieve more for less. “The trend for large LE shows
