IP-Based Remote Television Studio Control
By Peter Thomsen, Deputy Managing Director Danmon Systems
Self-operated studios have been a routine element of radio broadcasting for decades. They allow reporters or invited guests to participate in live on-air programmes without having to travel to a network’s central premises. The greater complexity of a video production, combined with the need for an independent operator to supervise camera angle, zoom and focus, has made this concept much less common in the television arena. An IP-based remote HD studio system has been designed by Danmon Systems Group (DSG). This new system enables television broadcasters to establish highly efficient regional contribution studios along similar lines without requiring local control staff to supervise and operate them. The result is greater production flexibility without sending operating costs through the roof. The entire studio can be driven securely and efficiently by a single operator using a standard internet browser. The system is based on integrated pan-tilt-zoom HD/ SD cameras. Features include full camera and pedestal control, return monitoring and 60 inch elevated background display screens. Special attention has been made in the design of the system to ensure completely foolproof local operation. Nothing in the studio can be rendered inoperative, even if the equipment is used by a distracted reporter or a first-time studio guest. The only local user-adjustable element of the entire regional studio is the earpiece volume level (Photo 1). Every major element of the system can be supervised and controlled via a standard web browser by an operator located either at a channel’s headquarters or, if necessary, offsite. Web-based control delivers maximum operational flexibility between different control rooms or galleries without requiring installation of additional hardware. High sound quality is achieved by using very high-grade microphones and ultralow-noise pre-amplifiers plus an audio delay unit to maintain lip sync. The guest will see the host on a dedicated monitor just below the camera. The background monitor is driven via live video from the broadcaster or via an attached remote controlled clip-player. The first systems have been designed and delivered by DSG for a major Scandinavian broadcast television network. Eight have already been installed, six at regional stations plus two parliamentary studios. They are being used to contribute live HD television news content to the network’s headquarters. The idea behind the project is for the broadcaster to gain flexibility and speed by being able to invite guests to their nearest remote studio. The equipment in each remote studio is operated via full web-based remote control. Video with embedded audio as well as return feeds are connected via dedicated lines, some fibre-based and some JPEG2000-based. One of the remote controlled studios can be seen in Photo 2 with a reporter’s-eye view of the system in Photo 3. Each of the remote controlled studios is configured with integrated pan/ tilt/zoom cameras including fixed optics, operating in SD or HD, with full camera control including tilt, lateral angle, zoom and focus as well as camera elevation, elevation of the 60 inch background display screen, power for light and mains power for the system. All control data is carried securely via intranet or VPN. Regional broadcast content has long been a popular element of broadcast television but the cost of maintaining traditionally structured local studios often makes the investment difficult to justify. The new remote controlled HD studio has a very wide range of applications both in traditional

news broadcasting and in the many programme genres that require live input from remote participants. The system is a natural progression in a world where broadcasters increasingly depend on IP solutions for file delivery and remote playout control. DSG is an international systems integrator and supplier of consultancy, systems and services, within every aspect of broadcast and media technology. Partnership is central to the company’s philosophy. By establishing close and trusting relationships with its customers, DSG aims to work with them to identify

their precise requirements and then implement the right solutions with equal precision. This process involves much more than what is normally thought of as ‘systems integration’. DSG is one of the world’s most experienced providers of systems integration support to television and radio broadcasters, postproduction houses and professional audio studios, as well as the corporate, academic and government sectors. DSG’s fields of activity include every aspect of broadcast and electronic media technology, from consultancy to production and postproduction, transmission and archiving, encompassing video, audio, graphics, streaming, audio visual and multimedia applications. DSG is a part of Dan Technologies Group

which has more than 125 proactive and strongly-motivated staff operating internationally from offices in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. DSG has completed many successful projects over more than 25 years. These range in size from the comparatively modest to the extremely large. Recent successes include: * Developing and installing a robotic camera system for TV2 News, Copenhagen, including HD/ SD cameras with optical fibre signal feed, pan/tilt/lens control, motorised pedestal and attached prompter greatly extending the channel’s 24/7 news operations. * Designing, constructing and complete turnkey delivery of regional TV stations in Vietnam, including extensive on-site technical and journalistic training. * Equipping and installing a radio station in Ethiopia. Reliability together with ease of operation and maintenance were key objectives. * HD upgrade of production systems for ATG Kanal 75, Sweden. The first phase of this project, already completed, included a new hybrid multi-format router, a new router control system and new HD infrastructure. On the audio side, the project encompasses the implementation of a new communication system and new fibre ring infrastructure. Danmon Systems Group will be exhibiting its full range of broadcast consultancy and systems integration services on stand B51 in Hall 8 at IBC 2011, Amsterdam RAI Centre, 9 – 13 September. The company will be represented by senior management staff from its Danish headquarters as well as from its overseas offices.
