Grass Valley And Dorna Sports Shortlisted IBC2011 Innovation
Grass Valley and Dorna Sports have been shortlisted in the highly soughtafter IBC2011 Innovation Awards. Recognized for its achievements in the Content Creation Category, the companies were shortlisted out of more than 130 submissions, for its involvement in the live production of the MotoGP World Championship with, Spanish-based production company, Dorna Sports. Grass Valley developed a unique storage and asset management solution for Dorna Sports (the exclusive TV rights holder) for use during the racing events. Dorna Sports covers all 18 races in the MotoGP international motorcycle season, with more than 120 high-definition cameras at every event. Approximately 2,000 clips a day are created and Grass Valley developed its innovative solution, based on touchscreen controllers, which allowed a small team of operators to mark, rate, and prepare clips for replay. The solution enabled the Grass Valley K2 Dyno™ Replay Controller and K2 Summit™ production client to interface seamlessly to an Apple XSan and 25 seats of Final Cut Pro for editing. The entire system was readily portable so Dorna could easily transport it around the various race tracks. “Dorna has been involved in the MotoGP World Championship live production since 1992, working hard to develop and refine innovative technologies to serve the live broadcasting requirements of a unique sport, said Manel Arroyo, Media Area Managing Director of Dorna Sports. “While we believe that we have the best workflow for the type of sports coverage we produce, being shortlisted for the IBC Innovation Awards just confirms this, and we couldn’t be more pleased.” Grass Valley and Dorna Sports are one of just three shortlisted in the Content Creation category for the most innovative projects. The IBC2011 Innovation Awards are unique in the sense that they recognize how suppliers and customers work together to create something truly innovative – celebrating the application of technology in bringing creative, commercial, or operational benefits to the end user. “This really is an outstanding year for the IBC2011 Innovation Awards, with a very strong shortlist,” said Michael Lumley, chair of the judging panel. “We have flying monsters and business graphics, news production and transmission networks, motorbikes and online delivery. Broadcast Pix Unveils New Video Production Systems at IBC2011
Broadcast Pix™ will showcase its new Granite™ 500 and Slate™ 500 live video production systems at IBC2011 (Booth 7.B20). Broadcast Pix will also demonstrate the new Granite 2000, its most powerful 1 M/E video production system. Equipped with recently upgraded Fluent™ workflow software, the systems provide an ideal toolset at an attractive price point for broadcasters and webcasters, as well as other AV installations. “We have the best control surfaces for combining cameras, clips, and graphics to create compelling live video,” said Ken Swanton, president of Broadcast Pix. “There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution for live video production systems, so we have expanded our product lines to offer solutions designed to fit any workspace and any budget.” Ideal for small control rooms or mobile operations, the new Granite 500 and Slate 500 systems deliver the features of other Broadcast Pix systems, but with a much smaller footprint and lower price. The 1 M/E control panel supports up to 18 sources and six keyers for overlays of picture-in-picture boxes and graphics, yet is so compact that it fits in a rack drawer. Both systems feature the complete suite of Fluent file-based workflow tools, including integrated clip and graphic stores, device controls, built-in Harris CG, Fluent-View multi-viewer, and Fluent Macros, the industry’s only file-based macros. Granite 500 offers 11 HD/SD-SDI inputs (expandable to 22) and six HD/ SD-SDI outputs (expandable to 12). The Slate 500 hybrid system offers four or eight analog, HD/SD-SDI, or DVI inputs and four (expandable to five) outputs. Both systems provide seven channels of file-based inputs from the built-in clip store and graphics systems. Another recent addition to the Granite family, Granite 2000 features a wide control panel with a large work area. It includes 16 input buttons (up to 32 with shift), six keyer buttons, and 10 auxiliary output buttons, plus key priority controls and mnemonics to display aux output assignments. The panel features patented PixButtons™ – which dynamically display the sources and file names on the buttons – for every input, key, and content library. Like all Broadcast Pix systems, Granite 2000 has a unique device control section to provide easy access to its built-in Fluent file stores for clips, animations, and graphics, as well as controls for external devices like robotic cameras, audio mixers, video streamers, and video servers. Granite 2000 also includes a dedicated bank of controls for Fluent Macros. The new Granite 2.0 pipeline simplifies the production workflow for Apple Final Cut Pro users. Operators can simply copy a single file to the Broadcast Pix system and instantly load QuickTime animations with key and audio. Plus, new playlist capabilities enable a sequence of clips to automatically play. Granite 2.0 also fully integrates Chyron’s Lyric PRO 8

into its system, allowing operators to use the optional CG software to create sophisticated titles and 3D animations. Slate 8.5 upgrades the system’s built-in CG to Harris GS, a more powerful CG with an easier interface and improved handling of Asian languages. Slate 8.5 also adds some Granite 2.0 features, including clip playlist capabilities and an enhanced chromakey interface that makes precise color selection and adjustment easier and faster. Streaming device control is now standard for both systems as well, enabling Granite and Slate to drive ViewCast streaming appliances from the control surface.
