This year has been a very busy one for EVS with the live video technology leader taking
a central role in global coverage of several major sporting events...

D

uring the Winter Olympics
and Paralympics in Sochi,
the FIFA World Cup in Brazil and
the Commonwealth Games in
Scotland, all live action at all of
the arenas was recorded onto EVS
servers, including the enhanced
XT3 for immediate replays and
subsequent editing.
The
events
also
saw
experimentation
and
new
services. 4K Ultra-HD television
was captured at a number of
World Cup games, for example.
Many broadcasters at the Winter
Olympics developed sophisticated
remote working schemes, where
servers in Sochi were linked
to servers in their own home
bases, thousands of kilometres
away, exchanging content freely.
A
sophisticated
multimedia
distribution workflow was able
to provide World Cup viewers
worldwide with near-live content
on their connected screens.

New services included a rich
set of mobile and tablet offerings
for second-screen applications.
Using the EVS C-Cast connected
content platform, white-label and
branded apps gave sports fans
access to multiple channels of the
EVS server for near-live, original
and personalised action.
Twentieth Anniversary
2014 also saw EVS mark its 20th
anniversary as the leading provider
of video production systems. At
IBC2014, EVS will showcase its
vision for the next 20 years oriented
around key technology priorities
that will enable broadcasters and
production companies to meet the
demands of a rapidly changing
media landscape:
*	Mastering	media	workflow;
*	Working	more	productively;
*	Reaching	more	audiences;
*	Transitioning	to	future	workflows.

priorities onto its four key markets:
sports, entertainment, news and
media.
Mastering Media Workflow
The content chain was once
a simple line from acquisition
through production to broadcast.
Today the landscape is very
different. Material is shot on a
whole range of devices, from
phones and GoPros to 4K digital
cinematography
cameras.
Finished content is delivered in
an equally wide range of formats,
codecs and wrappers. All of this
content has to be managed.
The EVS OpenCube Server SD/
HD/DCP, as its name suggests,
supports a broad range of content.
More importantly, it incorporates
a range of tasks, which would
otherwise require an external
workstation.
Workflows built using the
OpenCube Server can incorporate
an extended range of MXF file
generation and advanced MXF file
interoperability, including AS-02,
AS-03 and AS-11, as well as IMF
support. It also manages ancillary
data like closed captioning/
subtitling throughout the entire
production and archive chain.
In one device, users can
generate, deliver and manage
content efficiently, seamlessly and
consistently. Adherence to open
standards means the content
is readily exchanged with other
users.
Also on display is the latest
toolkit for IPDirector for automated
archive and production workflows,
in combination with XT3 and XS
production servers. This includes
AutoClipping:
the
automatic
creation of clips of sporting action
based on keywords from external

statistics systems.
The new Archive Melt feature
makes it simple to flag the clips
to archive during an event. They
are all then flattened into a single
melt file, which can be transferred
quickly and easily, along with a log
sheet containing all the original
metadata. The content is cleared
from the production servers swiftly
for better productivity, and specific
clips can be retrieved using partial
restore in the archive.
Working More Productively
With viewers now constantly
expecting more angles and more
insight in their sports coverage,
EVS is expanding its range of live
production tools. In addition to
traditional control panels, content
on XT3 servers can now be
managed using the C-Cast Xplore
browser interface.
This means that production
teams working anywhere can
access the server to use and
enhance content on the fly.
Production
companies
can
achieve a balance between on-site
and home-base working, with staff
at each working collaboratively.
C-Cast Xplore, as it was
implemented at the 2014 FIFA
World Cup, is the key to successful
remote production, dramatically
speeding the creation of
package highlights, and
significantly
reducing
production cycles.
Reaching More Audiences
The
FIFA
World
Cup
multimedia
project
-
designed,
implemented
and managed by HBS, the
event's host broadcaster -
was a flagship offering for
what will increasingly be a
routine demand. Viewers

were able to use it to augment
the television content by selecting
their own choice of camera angles
and replays, along with statistical
streams and additional team
information.
The system was powered by
EVS C-Cast technology. It adds
to the live production system
with a flexible, cloud-based
platform, which enables instant
distribution of multimedia content
to connected devices.
Using C-Cast, the World Cup
project was able to serve rich
multimedia content to its rightsholders to incorporate in their
own second-screen apps. During
the event, 24 million unique users
consumed 15 million hours of
video through the system.
Transition To Future Workflow
Broadcasters and production
companies today are under
increasing pressure to generate
more content and to use it in
more ways while at the same time
controlling costs and minimising
risk in their operations. Workflows
have to be flexible, cost-effective
and scalable. They also need to
be future-proof, for example to
support 1080p production, higher
frame rates or a move to 4K
Ultra-HD.
The new range of EVS XT3 and
XS servers are primarily aimed at
outside broadcast and live studio
production. Built with flexibility and
scalability in mind, they are ready
for emerging technologies, for
example through the inclusion of
10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.
The latest server models provide
the robust performance required by
today's busy productions, and are
ready to transition to tomorrow's
standards and workflows when
required.
EVS has a four-fold
approach to the broadcast
market segments.
