A

t the first major exhibition since
the Sochi Winter Games and
the World Cup in Brazil, vendors
are eager to show how 4K, remote
production and second screen
technologies
were
leveraged
through these venues.
The conference has daily themes
featuring forward-looking topics to
get you anticipating your visit to
the show floor.
The first day, Thursday, spotlights
how broadcast fits in an IP-centric
world. IP is a pretty global wideranging term and often little
thought is given to its effect on
aspects like spectrum allocation
and the rising costs of sports
rights. Sessions will cover this in
detail. IP is used everywhere in
broadcast now, but still is nowhere
near to being the mainstream
choice for full bandwidth plants.
However, new advancements
in both IP and compressed
domain workflows are pushing
the envelope. The thought of
switching a plant over to IP is
scary, but with UHDTV requiring
12Gp/s this becomes a more
pressing concern. UHDTV displays
are just beginning to be used for
multiviewers and on studio sets.
Currently, these tend to have
dedicated functionality and are
independent of the facility's main
video distribution system.
As you poke around the show
you will see newer technologies
that cram UHDTV into IP and
ultimately this will be the future for
broadcasters.
Be sure to ask lots of questions,
as there are two predominate

standards, AVB and SMPTE 2022,
and both are fighting for top spot.
I see these working in harmony,
but take the opportunity to learn
about the pros and cons of both
as infrastructure vendors battle
on the show floor and in paper
sessions for dominance.
MAM
is
finally
gaining
momentum. Is this due to cloud
or new media operations? Find

The second day focuses on
the growing list of changing
technologies ranging from filebased workflows to cloud and of
course 4K. 4K is the latest format
and presents a quandary in the
multi-platform mix. Last year
the 4K focus at the show was
more on cinema and stitching 4K
cameras together for sports. Now
broadcasters and OTT providers
are using 4K film content to fill the
high-end viewer market niche and
position themselves for expanding
4K demand.
The majority of broadcasters
don't want to even consider 4K
for TV productions yet. However
4K cameras now include DSLRs
with optional packs for SDI
outputs bringing 4K directly into
the broadcast production world
identified as UHD. 4K is a film
format that is a little wider than
16x9, whereas UHD is 16x9 to
keep compatibility with HDTV.
4K cameras can be switched
into 16x9 UHD modes for
television usage. By shooting new

productions in UHD, broadcasters
are future proofing their assets. In
addition to the unveiling of new
4K cameras, this year's show will
highlight UHDTV production tools
and servers.
People want larger sets and
ultimately will be sitting closer
to the set - this is where UHDTV
shines. The question is, will
consumers want to strictly use
the sets for TV programmes and
movies, or will they also fill the
up the screen with social media
whilst watching long-form TV and
sporting events?
Will SDI go away? Clyde Smith,
SVP New Technology at Fox,
a strong promoter of MXF will
definitely have a strong opinion
in the session "The death of SDI?
The promise of complete IP based
production".
Neelie Kroes, European Union
VP, will deliver a keynote speech
later in the day covering her views
on the internal market for audiovisual and telecoms along with
current considerations for the UHF
spectrum band.
Social media, short-form clips
and Internet delivery - all are altering
time-honoured business models.
Day Three, Saturday, examines
the changing responsibilities of
content producers, aggregators,
and service providers during
these confusing times. Tim
Davie, BBC Worldwide CEO and
Director Global, describes how
BBC Worldwide is adapting and
embracing new media.

today's challenging multiscreen
ecosystem.
